Gaining weight after 45
I am really skinny OR I have been really skinny my whole life.
I think there is a pre-menopausal weight gain going on with me...not to mention that lately I have been eating crap.
I guess it could be related to more than just my mood, my stress. My mood has been pretty low and I eat basically whatever I feel like....and my stress level has been very high which makes me not want to cook, so I eat out alot. I went from 105 to 118 in 2 weeks. It just seems like it is has gotten harder for me since I was 45 to eat whatever I want.
I never had a problem prior to turning 45.

Re: Gaining weight after 45
For sure ...age has a lot to do with weight gain. I've always been thin ,and I am 15lbs overweight right now ( I'm 58). Our metabolism slows down . Just look around. I don't think you'll see that many thin over 50 year olds, unless they live at the gym and starve themselves.. I mean it IS possible to keep your weight down .,But you have to ramp up your exercise ,and at 58 I just don't have the same energy I had at 38 when I went to the gym every day and also did aerobics classes 3 days a week. Then I didn't have a problem staying at 114lbs. But I'm also in the middle of menopause and that doesn't help with the whole weight thing either.

Misssy2: Yes, it's the hormones changing. Your body is producing more fat to hold on to the estrogen in the fat when your ovaries slow down the production of it. Estrogen loves fat. You do need to be careful what you eat because you don't want to end up being a diabetic either.

Are you on any meds? Sometimes those could make you gain weight, too.

Hang in there, you're not alone.
Try drinking more water and eating more salads and lean proteins.

I am 37 and worry a great deal about weight gain as I get older. I hope I don't end up overweight beyond 40. I diet and exercise and wish I was 5kg lighter but m not overweight so I guess I should b happy with my weight

Re: Gaining weight after 45
ladies: Dr. Oz was saying on his show yesterday that one of the reasons we gain weight, especially in the belly, is because as we age we lose muscle mass. He also recommended taking magnesium to help keep you from getting bloated there. He gave a demo on the intestines and how they can swell up with fluid so the magnesium helps keep your bowels moving better. I already take it anyway.

Re: Gaining weight after 45

You're under stress and don't feel like cooking, so you eat out. After eating out and gaining weight, your mood gets worse. And when your mood is worse, you eat whatever you feel like. And of course age doesn't help; if anything, we have to try harder as we get older. So where will you start to break this cycle?

I would start with the stress. Most stress is of our own making and if we can make it, we can usually unmake it. There are stress reduction techniques. Have you tried any? Another thought: Maybe if you talk about what is causing your stress, someone will have some helpful suggestions for reducing it. If it involves a relationship, there's even a board for that.

I was just looking at some info on another thing Dr. Oz mentioned called L-arginine. He said it's a metabolism booster. It's an amino acid. Read up on it.

Re: Gaining weight after 45
I understand because our bodies are under so much stress of the environment. The foods, air, water, and the soil. Our bodies are wonderfully designed in a unique way, but because of compromising so much it is a up hill battle.

I've found out that there is one true factor in why we age and that is the depletion of certain molecules that are key to this aging disease at least to slow it down.

Re: Gaining weight after 45
Metabolism slows dramatically as you age, but most people seem to completely ignore it, and continue eating according to the usual routine. The key is simply eating less calories (maybe cut in half or so), or if you're not hungry, don't eat. That is probably another mistake made often, when people simply think, "it's 12pm so I have to get lunch." Stress would also contribute, but you could try meditation or yoga, and that in turn could control mid-day cravings. Plus, since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, there is evidence that if the bulk of your fat, protein and calories are consumed first thing in the morning, it would control your cravings during the day. I only wish I had a reference to that article.

Know that too much magnesium will cause beware.
Also, don't forget that the thyroid gland regulates our metabolism and our mood. Google hypothyroidism which is very common in women. Perhaps you can have your doctor do some bloodwork to check your thyroid levels. Iron, ferritin, Vit D, Vit B-12 if low can cause problems as well. Many blessings to you.
