Is there testing for alcohol allergies?

    Hi all.
Over the past several months, I've been having episodes of hives at night. My face gets super red, I itch all over and I get big red welts all over me - usually my face, neck, back, chest and arms.

I was also recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and my research shows me that it is common for people with autoimmune hypo to get hives. However, I started making another connection - that often the symptoms seem worse if I'm drinking red wine. I had a particularly violent reaction on New Years - after a few glasses of wine, I was not only red and itchy all over, but vomiting. Which is VERY unusual for me. And it's taken my stomach days to recover. It could have been a stomach bug as I was feeling a bit queasy the couple days before, but it really scared me.

So, I really want to check to see if I've developed a legit allergy to something in wine, or if it was just due to other issues. I do have a history of extensive allergies (trees, weeds, grasses, mold, cats, dust) so it wouldn't surprise me if I've developed another one.

But my question is, is there a test for alcohol allergies? Skin ***** or blood? Do they just test for sulfites/yeast/gluten or is there something else they'd look for? I just want to know whether testing is an option or whether I'll just have to determine by trial and error which booze is a problem for me.

Are you of Asian heritage? Red wine allergy is common for them. And red wine is a common allergen due to the sulfite levels. However, one thing you said - "several" glasses of wine. Perhaps the several was the issue?

Thanks for the reply. No, not Asian. I'm 40, caucasian and am no stranger to red wine and have always been able to have several glasses of wine (over the course of several hours) with no lingering effects. More than 4 glasses, I'm entering hangover territory but even then, we're talking headache - not vomiting. I'd have to go way over that to vomit. So based on my history, the redness, hives and vomiting are completely unusual and disproportionate to my usual response to drinking that same amount.
