    Question anyone allergic to cabbage?

Is anyone else out there allergic to cabbage? If so, what kind of reaction do you get when you eat it?

Magpie~ I'm allergic...as in "cabbage makes me sick"! My Danish grandmother used to like to saute it in bacon fat and call it a side dish...make cabbage soup, cabbage rolls stuffed with hamburger and rice, cole slaw...I don't even like mayo as a result! What happens when you eat cabbage? Is it the same with brussels sprouts (don't like them either!)

    Re: anyone allergic to cabbage?

I am so glad I found this page. Until today, I thought I was the only person with this type of allergy. I get some really weird looks when I ask questions about the salads and if they contain red cabbage, etc...
I found out I had the allergy in 1998, I had just eaten a container of coleslaw and became very disoriented on the way home from work, almost passed out behind the wheel and barely missed crashing my car into the train track. It took doctor's many months to figure out the actual cause of the problem. I am so allergic that I can't even wipe it off a table or do dishes that came in contact with it without having a severe itch within minutes. I get really red faced and short of breath, start wheezing if I don't take an allergy pill I have passed out from it. Just from wiping a table off at work, I itched for 3 days. Now here is the strange part, I can eat broccolli or cauliflower without any problems. But let me eat radishes or horseradish and I have the same problem. I couldn't figure out why I was having problems when ordering seafood, I didn't have the coleslaw and it wasn't even put on my plate but minutes after eating my seafood I would start having problems. Turned out to be the seafood sauce, it contains horseradish. It also limited what I could eat when ordering Chinese carryout. It's not such a big deal now but until lately it drove me crazy. I hope this helps you and I would love to hear back from you. Thanks.

I can eat cabbage if it is grown w/o using any pesticides. If it has been sprayed it will make me very very sick, also cause seizures. I buy organically grown cabbage & wash it b/4 eating. I don't think most people wash their cabbage, hope I'm wrong.

Well as far as I am concerned, you are wrong. I always wash anything that comes from the garden and I even wash meat before I cook it. I still can't eat it regardless of what I do to it. Thanks for the information and I am sure that many people don't wash cabbage before cooking it. I have worked in the food industry and it has been a topic of discussion many times about food handling procedures by employees. Good luck with your allergies.

omg i think my sister is allergic to cabbage too. She started a diet that consisted of eating cabbage soup. Then she started to get these bumps that looked like mosquito bites that would get bigger and bigger everytime she would scratch them. She also gets rash in her fingers and today her lip and her left eye was swolen when she woke up.

It sounds like it to me. I would have her see a specialist to be on the safe side. If her swelling is extreme, take her to ER. If she is extremely allergic her throat could swell until it is shut or she could black out all together. If she is allergic, tell her to avoid egg rolls, cocktail sauce, V-8 juice, any form of cabbage, some people are also allergic to brocolli, brussel sprouts, horseradish, califlower and read the labels on salads, RED CABBAGE in most of them and vegetable soups as well. She might want to get tested for allergic reactions to MSG as well, I became allergic to both about the same time and I was eating lots of Chinese food and found out they use MSG excessively. It took a long time for the doctors to figure out my problem, but I wasn't armed with the knowledge that I have today either. Have your sister keep a food diary and see what happens after meals, I use benedryl if I have a slight reaction. The food diary will save her from having to spend lots of money on tests/co-pays not to mention the discomfort from taking the tests. There are so many things that could cause those same reactions, so check the symptoms out on *****.com. If I am not mistaken, that could also be an allergic reaction to latex exposure too. I am not a nurse, doctor, etc....I am just sharing my experiences with you. Always seek professional assistance on things like this. Just have the ammo with you when you arrive at the doctor's office to expedite solving the problem. Good Luck in finding a solution to your problem. God Bless you.
