    Allergies?? Ears/panic.... all related?

I'm new to this thread and have some questions... for years I have had problems with my ears, usually one at a time. They feel clogged and when I swallow it makes a crunching sound, I am continually stuffed up on one side or the other in my nose ..... sometimes my nost gets so itchy and I sneeze only sometimes, I also wake up every morning with s sore throat and feel like I have to get stuff out of it before it will feel better. I have had 'episodes' where I feel very dizzy and have to lay down for awhile after these episodes my ears are really rocking. They got so bad that I went to the doctor and he said that he did see some fluid in them and prescribed antibiotics. They are feeling somewhat better but they still drive me crazy!! I have in the past years ago seen an ear specialist who could see nothing wrong..... Could these symptoms by allergies? I have not been tested for allergies the doctor said that there is no need to that he is convinced that I have them and there is no point.....

Another question... I have panic disorder and have noticed that when my ears act up that's when I see to really have a problem with panic... could they be related? I know that when I feel off balance which happens often that is one trigger for my panic....... it would be nice to put the correlation together... has anyone else had similiar experiences?? I have a hard time taking decogestants as they make my anxiety worse and I have tried an allergy med but only took a couple.... I guess I am looking for anyones input or ideas........

    Thanks.....

I would follow the Dr.'s advice certainly. But if you loose balance and feel a bit of panic and dizzy then perhaps your inner ears are also swelling. This can be caused by allergy. But it can also be caused by other things. You may have multiple problems. Your Dr's would certainly be able to see swollen inner ears but perhaps they were not swollen when you saw the Dr.

I am not a Dr but I do get swollen inner ears from environmental allergies (like fumes from paint, gas, prefumes and anything scented) so I can tell you that to calm that down..get rid of the off balance dizzy's and some panic that this causes (yes the swollen inner ears makes me feel panic first, as though I must hurry ect ect then the dizzy starts and I'm in big trouble cuz the entire room will spin) ..you can take over-the-counter Dramamine for motion sickness which works because it shrinks swollen inner ears.. It works GOOD. It is what a hospital ER DR told me to take while my allergy Dr was figureing out what I was allergic too. This was years ago but I still have the allergy and I still keep Dramamine very handy. I take it at the first sign of my problem and it stops it.

Thats just a suggestion to try and I hope your Dr can help you.

are you taking any medications for the panic disorder? Meds like Effexor and Buspar cause dizziness in lots of people.

You're not alone. I've had problems with my ears and dizziness/lighteheadedness as well. I would recommend going to an ENT, have a CT scan of your sinuses done (I just back from mine), to make sure strucutral problems of the nose and sinuses are not causing an issue. I've heard that fluid and bacteria can enter the Eustachian tubes of your ears through impacted or malfunctioning sinuses.

Also see an allergist. I have a serious dust mite allergy, and I had to go out and get special covers for my matress and pillows. I'm looking into immunotherapy.

Keep in mind, however, that doctors are quick with the "it's just allergies" diagnosis. When over-the-counter meds for allergies don't work, you need to start exploring other options.

Yes, I agree docs are quick to to diagnose by saying "it's just allergies" I have heard that numerous times and I am sick if it. Yes I realize I have allergies. I have had them for many years. But now my problem has worsened and I now suffer from chronic post nasal drainage which has caused severe pressure in my right ear along with pain. Possibly eustachian tube dysfunction....

I see an ENT next week and I am going to lay it all on him so he checks me thoroughly and I do not just leave his office with nasal spray and allergy meds because they DO NOT work.

I also recently started having anxiety attacks where I get very dizzy and nauseated and I feel like I cannot breathe well. It freaks me out and I have wondered if it could be related to my ear problems. I know the dizziness has to do with the middle ear and my equilibrium. I occasionally have to take nausea/diziness pills prescribed to my by the ER doc.

I understand what you are going through as I live it every day and am on a mission for some relief!

I am totally with you on this. I also have panic disorder. I have felt dizzy lately too. I had a virus this winter and have the residue still. Spitting up phlem in the morning and thru the day, but less. I actually have an appointment with my p.doc tomorrow. I hate the dizziness, as I am so super sensitive, to it causing me to feel panic. What do you take for the panic disorder, may I ask?
    I take xanax, and Celexa.
Hope to hear back from you.

To answer your question... I was on paxil for a year but weaned myself off of it last may. It really saved me when it came to my panic disorder but the side effects were just too much. Before the paxil I was on xanax which was another life saver.. currently I take nothing. I really believe that for me if not for the problems I am having with my ears I would be feeling ok in the panic department. It is very true that people with panic disorder become super sensitive to all bodily sensations so what would be no big deal to someone who doesn't have the disorder becomes a very big deal to a panic disorder sufferer.

    Hope your doing well

    Re: Allergies?? Ears/panic.... all related?

Peaches, I got some very interesting info from my allergist at my appointment yesterday.

I had read your post before I saw my allergist, (for bad dust allergies)

He said that when people have very severe allergies, the body produces a lot of histamine.

When the body notices this, it produces adrenaline, which according to the doc is the only natural thing that counters histamine.

This may cause shakes, panicky feelings.

This can be made worse after working out or taking hot showers.

I wanted to see if my doc would test my histamine levels but he told me to see my general doc.

So besides being intesting info and prescribing more naserel it was not that helpful.

My ENT was even worse. My ears look good, and told me to go back if blood or pus comes out of my ears. ???

I thought this might be interesting for you.

Peaches, I had forgotten to note this. I happen to be on dilantin for seizures which apparently is a medicine that reduces histamine levels in the body.

Who knows what high histamine levels do to body. Seems like none of my docs do.

    Re: Allergies?? Ears/panic.... all related?

Thank you DucatiPro for your reply and for thinking of me when you went to the doctors... it was very much appreciated!

I am postive that my ears have almost all to do with my panic and you explained the connection well. I have my worst panic when my ears 'act' up I get dizzy and then I panic.... At the present time my left ear is bothering me to the point of tears... it aches, gurgles and makes me feel off balance. Every time I go to the doctors they say with all my symptoms that it is allergies, I take decogestants as advised but I find that they only cause anxiety... I feel like there is nothing to do but suffer as no one seems to know what to do. soooo frustrating...... I take tylenol for the pain and to date I am going to try a new allergy med. I hope to find some relief as this is driving me nuts!

Once again thank you for your input, it helps to know that their are people out there like you!

    Re: Allergies?? Ears/panic.... all related?

Have you had a CT scan of your sinuses?

My dizziness was due to a bacterial infection in my Ethmoid and Sphenoid sinuses, blocking my Eustachian Tubes and putting pressure on my inner ear cavities. I had dizziness for almost 6 weeks before any obvious sinus symptoms appeared.

Also, are you taking any anti-anxiety medications? They will most definitely make you feel dizzy -I mean real dizzy.

HI, I found your post informative...what is a CT scan of the sinuses? Is it a long process and expensive, no doubt?
What made you finally have one....your dr. recommend or were you pro-active on this one?

    chiggins...interesting about the anti-anxiety meds....
I have taken them for years. But they help my panic, not make me dizzy. I take xanax. What med caused your dizziness? Was it right away, or since taking them for awhile?

    Re: Allergies?? Ears/panic.... all related?

The CT Scan took only 20 minutes or so -no injections needed. It was very simple. They also did a chest X-Ray because I had asthmatic symptoms.

The CT Scan will reveal the presence of bacteria deep in the sinuses. It will also show structural abnormalities (deviated septum, polyps, etc.) that may be interfering with sinus drainage. Without this, the doctors are almost blind.

The anti-anxiety meds I was on were Effexor and Buspar. Effexor gave me horrible dizziness, identical to the sinus dizziness I felt this year. The Buspar also caused some dizziness, night-sweats, night-terrors (really whacked-out dreams). I couldn't stay on them. I was on each for about 2 months or so.

Chiggins, what specifically would one request when stuffy ears seem to be the problem.

I just got back from my ENT and he looked into my ear and up into my throat and that's it!

I asked him how I could get my inner ear checked out and he just blew me off. Even though I kept pressing, pretty hard for more.

He just scheduled me for a hearing test in 6 months.

    Any suggestions?
