allergy shots, need some info please

My daughter is six and has allergic asthma. She is currently on Advair,Singulair, Patanol(as needed for her eyes), and Pediox(as needed for runny nose and headaches) but in the past few days it has been obvious that the meds are not as effective as they have been previously. Her doctor told me that at any time he would be happy to get her started on allergy shots. All I had to do was say the word. My questions are.............

Do they have to do more allergy testing before beginning the shots? She previously had about 24 done on her arm and was allergic to approximately half of them.

Are the shots the most effective treatment? Her doc tells me they are but I am asking for YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE with shots.

How often do you get shots? Is there a standard or does it depend?

Are the shots done at the doc's office or do you administer them yourself?

Also if you have any pro's or con's that might help me in making this decision. My daughter is TERRIFIED of needles. She has gotten so many antibiotic shots for pneumonia and bronchitis and she screams and cries and makes herself sick every time. It is heartbreaking. I want to do the best thing for her but I don't want to traumatize her either.

Right now she is coughing, sneezing, and her eyes are bothering her. She has also been having headaches and her eyes were all gunky this morning. I am afraid we need to really consider shots........

First thing, you more than likely will not need more testing if the other tests were recent.
Secondly, I believe that the shots are extremely effective and that is the case for a majority of patients. I feel great as far allergies are concern. I am allergic to dust mites (high), dog & cat dander (high), ragweed (high), cockroach (high), I am allergic to all the mold I was tested for, oak trees (moderate), and two food groups, dairy and beef, which to my knowledge no shots are available on the market, yet.

Thirdly, the tests may vary from clinic to clinic but my allergist had me take them once a week for about 18 months then down to twice a week and now once a month.

    Good luck,

I don't know where you live, but here in the southeast, grasses and trees are already pollenating, so a lot of allergic folk are having trouble.

I have been severely allergic since I was three. Allergy shots help most people. Most people do very well with them. For me, they have meant the difference in that they keep me out of the hospital. Other than that, they have done little for me, but certainly staying out of the hospital is a good outcome.

If your child is so terrified of needles and you really want to consider allergy shots, there are really good therapists who can help your daughter learn relaxation techniques and other skills to help her overcome her fear. Your doctor or school psychologist should be able to recommend someone. That said, I hated getting shots when I was a young child. Later, you just get resentful that you still have to get them.

I know that they are now in clinical trials testing Xolair on children. I've been on it since October. It kicked in right at the beginning of the year and I've had three pretty good months now. I hardly even get headaches any more. MUCH better than how I was just on the allergy shots. I'm hopeful xolair will continue to be the drug many of us are hoping for.

All the best of luck in making your decision about allergy shots for your little one.
