    Post Nasal Drip Gagging

Allergies are apparently causing me to have a heavy early morning post nasal drip. I can see two heavy strings of mucous disappearing into my throat and it makes me feel like I am trying to swallow never ending strings. This lasts for maybe half an hour most mornings. I cough a little, but mostly just gag. My doctor says I have a strong gag reflex, and mostly will just have to live with it. I've tried Zyrtec and other drugs to dry up the drip, but it only seems to thicken it. Does anybody else out there have this kind of gagging experience and have you found a way to lessen it?

It's yucky, I know! I gag all the time and in the morning will try and try to get that stuff to come up and eventually I will bring up a lot of really thick mucus....I'm not sure how to end it either!

Well, at least it's nice to know somebody else goes through the same thing I do. I was beginning to think I had the world's strongest gag reflex. I've had this drip and subsequent gagging for about two years now - how about you?

Mine has only gotten worse in the last year or so. I've always had an easy gag reflex...I remember when I had a root canal done some time ago I almost literally threw up--it was the farthest back tooth I had. Not to be gross but that's how bad mine can get when my sinuses act up and mine were acting up that day. But as far as waking up gagging stuff up that's only been bad this year it seems, but now I do it at night when I brush my teeth too!

    Re: Post Nasal Drip Gagging

I've known others who gag on their toothbrushes, but it's usually when they try to brush the back of their throats. I don't even try that! I have no trouble swallowing big pills, but sinus drip and tongue depressors gag me non-stop. Any other gaggers out there with stories to share?

Me too. Throat swabs are the worst of all. I had a deep throat infection of some sort last year and it took the doctor 15 minutes to completely paint my throat because I was gagging continuously.

I just want to find something that will make my post nasal drip feel less stringy as I struggle to swallow it each morning when I wake up.

Drinking lots of water will help thin the mucus. Also there is a product you can buy over the counter called Mucinex, that will do the same thing. A lot of asthma doctors recommend it because it decreases mucus in the lungs also.

How does Mucinex work? Is it a spray, a pill, or what? I've tried antihistamines and saline sprays and nothing worked very well. Thanks.

It's a pill that used to be prescription only, but now is OTC. It is in the cough/cold aisle of most drugstores.

    Re: Post Nasal Drip Gagging

I use it everyday. It really helps. You will still have PND, but it thins it out.

I will definitely try it. It will be worthwhile if it thins out my PND. Do you have gagging problems with yours?
