    Re: Hives

I have had hives off and on for about 30 years. They have always been controlled nicely by antihistimines. I have had another bout with hives since this July that just wouldn't respond to anything - except pregnesone. My allergist suggested that I have blood work done to have my thyroid checked and I found that I have Hashimoto's which is an autoimmune disease like hives is. I was put on the lowest dose of synthroid and not only do I have more energy now, 6 weeks later I am hive free and on no medications for hives! I would suggest that anyone who is suffering from hives be tested for thryoid antibodies which would indicate Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

    Re: severe chronic urticaria

I got chronic hives about 6 years ago. I went to all the local specialists searching for the cause. I saw the allergist. I was prescribed stress medicines. Of course the only thing that would stop them was steroids which are not a good long term strategy.

When the local doctors couldn't find a cause, I went to Mayo Clinic for days of testing over a period of several weeks. In the end they said I was otherwise healthy and the hives were idiopathic (they don't know what the cause is). There was also mention of possible thyroid autoimmune problems but they didn't seem definite on that one. But, they did find a medicine that works for me. I take 20 mg of Doxepin at bedtime and I don't have outbreaks. If I miss this medication for even one day, I will start to break out. I read on this board that others have tried this medication and it did not work for them but I thank Mayo for finding a medication to keep my hives under control.

    Re: Hives

    Hi there,

I have been recently getting a hives reaction and i think i know the culprit. I have not been to the doctors though as feel daft going unless the hives is obvious as it has settled as i have been avoiding the culprit.

However the last coupld of days i do not have hives but my skin is so itchy it is driving me mad. I do not know what is causing it and am wondering if it is the cold. However i do not like going to the doctor as other than itching there is nothing physical to be cocnerns about.

    ANy advice xx

    Re: hives

    Hi..
This is my first post to this BB. I've suffered from Chronic Urticaria
for 6+ years. I've seen Dermatoligist and Allergist, of course with no positive
results. At this point I'm taking Allegra D and Zantac 150mg each morning
and Allegra 180 and a Zantac in the evening. This combination has worked
the best for me to keep the hives semi undercontrol altho I consantly have
prickly skin. I've recently read on another board that two of those BB members have been diagnosed with "Leaky Gut Sydrome". I'm wondering if
any of you on this board have had the same diagnosis and what the
    remedy was if you have.

Have any of you visited a HOMOPATHIC Dr and if so what was the suggestion?
I live in a VERY SMALL area of Northcentral Pa and without traveling forever,
there is NO ONE in the area with this type of knowledge.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Re: hives

Just wanted to thank everyone for taking the time for their input on
the DREADED HIVES !!! I think I'll request a small dosage of thyroid
medication just to see if I get any positive results. My last blood test
showed my thyroid activity was boarderline, and that was over a year ago.

I will try ANYTHING at this point.

    Thanks again...
