    Feeling horrible. Is this allergies?

Hi everyone, I have been going from doctor to specialist to doctor for the past 3 years trying to figure out what might be wrong with me. It seemed to be mostly digestive at first with what I thought was acid reflux due to the burning etc. I had fundoplication surgery last summer but the symptoms remained. Now I realize that the burning is likely not from acid.

I basically feel really ill every single day with burning in my chest up into the top of my head, mucous formation in my esophagus, dry mouth, runny nose, swollen neck glands, and nausea. My head feels like its three feet thick as well. Since all tests, including a CT scan of my head, have come back normal, I am now wondering about allergies. My appetite seems fairly normal but I have also lost a lot of weight (alot of which has to do with the surgery likely). All these symptoms put together really make me feel horrid!

Does this sound like allergies based on your experiences?

    Hi Blackdog,

Sounds like you've had a miserable spell.

About allergies ... IME there's usually some variation in symptom severity, depending on exposure to allergens. Also, histamine secretion in the body follows a certain pattern causing allergic symptoms to characteristically be worse at certain times of the day.

However, YMMV & certainly many of the symptoms you have named could be allergy-related. Testing is the best way to find out if allergy is a problem. You could see an allergist, or, when your doc runs the next metabolic panel (& I hope you have had a thorough blood chem or 2 done), ask to have total IgE added to the list of tests. What we commonly call allergy is a reaction mediated by this IgE antibody. If your total IgE is high, then allergy is a likely culprit. If IgE total is low, then it's time to look elsewhere.

    Best wishes.

Re: Feeling horrible. Is this allergies?

I had a bunch of blood tests done and I have a copy of them. I see IGE is listed at 76 kU/L and I believe the normal range is <120, however when they did the Ige Inhalent screens, it came up positive and an inhalent panel of tests was ordered.

On these 6 out of 10 came up on the high end with 3 of them being a +3 Positive. One was a mold and the other two were dust mites. So I'm not too sure what to make of this considering the total IGE was not that bad. I may post another topic on IGE values to see what info I can get from others...

On the other hand, I have been through a lot of tests and not one showed anything else to be wrong.

    O.K. let's do a little detective work...

    1. What medications have you been on in the last 6 months?

-some meds, like corticosteroids or even nasal sprays can cause wicked
acid reflux and burning in the chest.

    2. Have you had a chest X-ray?

-I developed some mild asthma last year after a wicked chest cold. My
lungs felt like they were burning at times from all the inflammation.

the fundoplication surgery is a big red flag here. Even if you don't currently have acid reflux, the tissue in your esophagus and even the lungs may be inflammed from before, and the medications may have made it worse.

Allergies are probably an issue, but I have had limited success with testing and immunotherapy. I had immunotherapy for dust mites and 6 months later I was even worse!

try dietary modification, irrigating your sinuses with a machine, taking Prelief before meals, exercising to get things moving.

You've had a bunch of tests, so I don't think this is anything serious -just bothersome.

Re: Feeling horrible. Is this allergies?

I haven't been on any meds for the past 6 months or so...nothing has helped so I am not taking anything anymore.

I have not had a chest xray either.

My symptoms are varied a lot...lots of headache pain, dizzy feeling at times, can't concentrate, nausea which comes and goes, shortness of breath, burning in chest and sinuses, and more. Makes for a brutal mix.

My nose runs and my sinuses seem to produce a lot of mucous (as well as my esophagus). The last couple days, the inside of my nose seems to be bleeding a bit as well - it may just be extremely dryed out.

If all or part of this is caused by allergies, I'm sure having a tough time figuring out what it is!
