    Very serious coughing problem.....

I'm pretty sure the problem is related to allergies since my allergies usually start in around when it happens or if I have a cold. I get this itchy feel in the back of my throat that triggers the coughing and once I get started I can't stop or even breathe cause I'm coughing so bad. The only way I've learned to help slow it down so I can breathe is to cover my mouth and nose with a towel. I freak out during this mainly from having to gasp for air. I've had this problem since I was around 12. I did tell my mother about it at the time I started having the problem often but she just figured I was over reacting. (She also thought I didn't need glasses when I was 17 till I complained enough that she finally took me and found out that I did need them). I was wanting to know if anyone else had this problem or knew what could help with it?

If it's that bad that you are gasping for air, maybe you should go to the doctor and see what they have to say...you may need an inhaler, or an adjustment of your allergy medicine, or something.

Not quite certain, but may be Laryngeal Reflux (LPR), which causes chronic dry cough, caused by small amounts of stomach acid getting into your throat. This is treatable with a Proton-Pump-Inhibitor taken 2x a day. The 3 PPIs I recommend are all by prescription and are called Nexium, Aciphex and Prevacid.

Tell your Mom that you need to see 2 doctors.

You need to see an ENT (Ear Nose & Throat / Otolaryngolosist) to have a "scope" done. You need that doctor to check for redness and swelling in the lower throat and larynx, which would generally confirm LPR.

You should probabably also visit a Pulmonologist who can check you for asthma and lung capacity. But please note that many many "atypical" cases of asthma that don't respond to asthma medications are actually caused by LPR. What happens is that first the acid in the stomach rises up into the throat, and then it gets aspirated down the other pipe into the lungs, where it mimics asthma, but will not respond to asthma medications.

If your Mom won't help you, make the appointments yourself. Find out who your insurance carrier is, then use that insurance website to find a doctor in your health plan and call and set an appointment. If you have insurance, the insurance pays for most of the visit and you usually have a copay of about $10-$25 dollars, which you will need to get from your Mom. You will also need to give the doctor the insurance card. Maybe your Mom will see how serious you are if you go about setting the appointments for yourself - you don't need her to do it. Just get the insurance card, see who the carrier is, and if you have any questions, call the customer service number on the card and explain to a representative that you need some help in learning how to find a doctor and set an appointment.

You need to see a doctor ASAP. There is a coughing varient of asthma that presents itself as non-stop coughing. Plus the gasping for breath is an asthma symptom. Given your history of allergies, you need to investigate this. Tell you mom you need to see a doctor.

An amazing herbal remedy for cough especially the dry one that comes after a viral flue due to weather change.

Heat up a small pan with little butter or ghee in it. Add a few grains of black pepper to it and allow it to splutter. After it cools down, chew it up followed with a glass of milk for a soothing effect. Do this three times a day.

Also follow this link for excellent tips on fighting cough:
