    acrylic mouthguard allergy

Since January 2007 I have worn a mouthguard made of acrylic material to stop my clenching at night. About two weeks after, I developed a very sore tounge and gum area around my inner lips. I was very sensitive to salt, spice and crunchy foods. This would clear up somewhat if I stayed away from these spices but would eventually return. I stopped wearing my mouthguard for about two months now and have'nt had an episode since. Could I be allergic to acrylic?

    Re: acrylic mouthguard allergy

My 13 year old son has had numerous problems with athletic mouthguards. I believe he is allergic to them. After wearing the mouthguard for the duration of the game he has red, swollen lips. He then gets very chapped lips for a few days.

At first I thought it may have been a combination of gatorade or other sports drinks with the mouthguard. I have had him drink only water, and he still has a reaction.

His mouthguards have a 'tab' that attaches to his helmet - this may be the reason his reaction occurs on his lips - not the inside of his mouth. Also, when he is having a 'reaction', after using the mouthguard, he cannot eat anything spicy or salty.

I have called the mouthguard manufacturers, they have said this is the only case they have ever heard of. Any advice?

It sounds like an allergy to me. Were there instructions to boil or soak the mouthpiece in water with peroxide a few b/4 using? That would help allergens outgas but it might also melt it.
