help me find out what's making me sick

For well over two months I've had a mild sore/swollen throat. Wasn't a big deal, but I now realize it may be an allergy.

A month and a half ago, I became very sick. Fever, sore throat, extreme fatigue. Which turned into abdominal and back pain and swelling, lymph pain. I felt like I was passing out at times, though I never did. icy prickles all over my body. Stiff neck and shoulders. I walked like I was drunk, I couldn't think straight, I couldn't take care of my son. I had trouble breathing and sometimes heart palpitations. I went to urgent care, but they couldn't find anything, I had him check for mono, I had blood and urine tests, everything was fine. But because I had sharp pain on the right side of my abdomen, he thought it could be gallbladder problem and recommended I have an ultrasound with my primary care physician. I don't have insurance, so I didn't have a doctor. At this point I really thought I had West Nile, but couldn't find anyone to test me.

It seemed to be getting slowly better though I would always have episodes at night. It was causing incredible anxiety, and I was so afraid I was dying, that something was terribly wrong.

Then it got real bad again. Then I came down with a cold on top of it. And after a few days of this I borrowed money to see a naturopath because I knew it was the only way to be heard, and possibly helped. After $700 in blood tests, we found out that I was perfectly fine. No west nile, my body didn't seem to be fighting anything at all. I was treated with homeopathic remedies, immune boosters, and vit C. And throughout all this time, I was on a mild diet, lots of soup, because I couldn't eat anything that was of any effort to digest.

My cold has cleared up. I seem to be doing a lot better. I'm up and moving around. But I still have this swollen throat, severely foggy brain, anxiety that gets worse when my symptoms get bad, abdominal sensitivity, hypersensitive eyes and hearing, and at night it's the worst. At night, I feel like I'm losing my marbles, like something terrible is happening to me, like I'm going to die. It's not just emotion, it's a very physical feeling. There have been times I was so cold that I was physically shaking, teeth chattering, and physically cold to the touch, and it would take an hour before I could get warm, with the help of someone else. The worst symptom is what's going on with my brain. It's just far too much for me to bear.

But I noticed that I seem to do better when I'm away from the house. I feel better if I go outside for awhile, though I still don't feel well. One day I spent the day at someone else's house and all my symptoms except for the swollen throat and incredible fatigue, were gone. I'd forgotten what the other symptoms were like until I came home again that night. Within minutes of being home, the anxiety kicked up and the symptoms with it. Dizzy, fog-brained, trouble breathing, nausea and abdominal swelling, temperature fluctuation, and so very scared.

I've only been living in this home for 6 months and besides this illness it seems something's always been wrong with me healthwise since we've been here. Early on I had such fatigue and it never really got better. I got sick multiple times. I've been attacked by spirits twice in my sleep, though there doesn't seem to be any noticeable ghosts here.

I don't see any signs of mold. I use natural cleaning products, natural foods, natural bedding. I don't know if I'm allergic to anything plantwise and I don't know if such an allergy could cause what I've been going through. What I do know is that I have a neighboor who absolutely deals drugs and very well could be manufacturing the drugs. I live in a duplex, therefore, we share the same wall, and possibly the attic is joined. But I don't want to assume he is, and get him in trouble if he really isn't doing me any harm.

We have some kind of vinyl flooring here, it's ALL vinyl, everywhere. This is really the only thing I could think that could effect me but I highly doubt that it could do me so much harm.

Well, I guess this is about all I can say. It seems something at home may be making me sick. It seems that my throat is reacting to something, whether it's a chemical in the air, or pollution (we really have terrible air quality here), or a plant. I do have a cat, but I've lived with cats all my life.

I'm going to try and see if I can stay somewhere else for a few day, but geez, this is just so hard to deal with. It's been a nightmare for me. And we have literally not even enough money to get by, and we couldn't afford to live anywhere else but a crime-ridden area, if we had to go (we renting cheaply from a relative).

So, please excuse the long story, and I'm just so hoping someone here can offer me some help and guidance with what I'm going through. Thank you so much.

The things to check that come to mind given your symptoms are: sleep disorder, thyroid, and mono.

Thyroid: TSH, FT3, and FT4.. get a copy of the results post them and the ranges on the thyroid board.

Mono.. straight forward GP blood test. Confirmation will let you know you are in for sore throat fun and flares for 18-24 months. You do not have to kiss to get this.. water fountains are one of the main carries of Mono.

Sleep deprivation due to sleep apnea, anxiety... etc can cause insomnia, sleep paralysis sleep walking talking and hallucinations when severe. When sleep deprived you body can not repair itself and has continually aggravated lymph nodes and often causes sinus and throat issues.

Best of luck tracking down the source of your problem.

Re: help me find out what's making me sick

Thanks for your help. I did have a thyroid test, and a mono test, and everything was fine. I've been suffering from insomnia for a couple years, but I generally get at least 6 hours a night.

Hi SoSweet! Get to the allergist and have every test they can think of. I did and I am allergic to additives and dyes in medicines and foods, plus the dog that I have been babysitting with my husband and the flea and tick treatment she's been getting. Use hypoallergenic baby products on your person and everything hypoallergenic. I'm allergic to rubber and things that they treat rubber with and one of my meds has an ingredient that is pepper based that bothers me. I have gone to all organic and feel a little better because of it. For me, it's been tough to rearrange your life into your 40's and 50's but thank God there are options. God bless and I will say a prayer that you are restored. Hopeto--

Have you or the neighbors used pesticides in the last few months? If the vinyl flooring is fairly new it could also be the problem. Do you use any products on your pet? Good luck!

Well if your TSH is around 1, and your FT4 and FT3 are in the 50-80% range then your thyroid is most likely not the culprit.

Some people can have mono and not test positive for it.. but those are rare cases. My husband was the only one I know that this happened to.. he incubated mono and passed it on to me, but never contracted it fully.. go figure.

Insomnia is more often than not a symptom of a greater sleep disorder, medication, or anxiety disorder. Sleep problems cause anxiety and depressive disorders themselves. Insomnia on its own is rare in the extreme. If you are practicing good sleep hygiene and still having chronic insomnia you need to go to a sleep specialist and get evaluated for a sleep disorder. Hop on the sleep disorders board and look into things there.. you might recognize symptoms of one of the many dominant sleep disorders in you.

    Sincerely,
    MG

Re: help me find out what's making me sick

Hi I just wanted to say that I have allmost been through exactly what you are going through. I moved here about six months ago. And my life with allergies began. I went to the doctor for about a week straight with terrible headaches and had no idea it was my head neither did they. But finally seen a doctor that did xray of my sinus cavities and he said it looked as though I had infection but there were no signs of infection so he gave me cortizone shot and antibiotics to be on safe side. Been Great every since, only been about a week but so far so good. Wonder what life is going to be like in two or three weeks when it comes back. And yea the house I am in makes me feel worse. Plan on seeing a allergists when I can. I will not live my life like that. Anyway hope you are feeling better.
    Lisa
