Post Any suggestions for bacterial overgrowth of small intestine/alternative to antibiotic

I recently had a hydrogen breath test that revealed a high level of bacterial overgrowth in my small intestine (should be sterile). My Dr. gave me a prescription for Neomycin (antibiotic) and said I had to wipe out the bad bacteria in the small intestine. He said absolutely no probiotics! Only be enema, if ever. He's also a naturopath, thus I can't understand why he's giving me the antibiotic! I bought PRIMAL DEFENSE from garden of life, but he said no probiotics, so I'm holding off. Haven't taken the antibiotic yet and am searching for a natural way of wiping them out instead. I believe the overgrowth is caused by my delayed emptying (gastroparesis) which is probably caused by an underlying auto-immune disease (I was recently had a positive ANA test). Do any of you know a good way to starve or flush out bad bacteria from the small intestine?? I still don't know why he said no probiotics (something about my stomach not being able to tell the good from the bad)???? Any advice?

I find this really bizarre that he is apparently a naturopath and he won't let you take probiotics. I have been taking PRIMAL DEFENSE and it has really helped me tremendously.

However, baring that, there are 2 really good things you can do to wipe out the bad bacteria. First, get a colonic or series of such. Second, take Sun Chlorella (little green pills), which is a natural bowel detoxifier.

You may even want to add a barley grass drink like Just Barley (which I take),however be prepared for the detox symptoms which can be flu-like at times.

These should help you get around the "no probiotic" ban for now, and still accomplish what you are looking to do.

Be careful with the colonic though, as after a colonic they will give you back probiotics in the wash back that will go into your bowel directly. You do actually need this after a colonic as it washes out the good bacteria too. Maybe that does not count though as you are not taking it by mouth and it is not going through the stomach.

I too am very surprised by what your ND told you. It does not seem to make sense to me. Also, the sterility thing is a joke too. Nowhere in the body is ever totally sterile.

Hope this helps and good luck?

Acidophilus capsules (which are available at any health food store or your local pharmacy) will help you maintain a proper bacterialogical balance in your digestive system.
