Appt w/Dr. today - Abnormal amount of water on/in brain? What's this?

My mother is living in San Diego and my brother took her to a doctor's appt. today. I made this appt (about 2 weeks ago) because I sense major changes in her thinking skills the last several months. Well, a few days ago, she went to ER for numbness in leg and arm. All checked out okay. BUT they did a Cat Scan (I think that's what it's called). The doctor today, saw those images and said he thinks she's in moderate-level dementia. But he also said there's abnormally high amounts of fluid in her brain. I guess fluid is common, but it tends to increase as the brain decreases in size???? SOOOOO... her brain is being pressured???? Her brain hasn't decreased in size, thus the pressure. Gosh, does any of this make sense? I could be completely off here, but wanted to get your input. My brother put me on speaker phone, so I only got bits and pieces here and there. She has an mri in a bit over a week. Then I'll fly down and meet with the neurologist a week after that.
We're all taking a cruise beginning this Saturday. Her doctor said, "Great, BUT just make sure she doesn't fall". Thank goodness we have a transport chair for her. We've used it a lot on previous trips and it's saved us all.
Thanks for listening and thanks in advance for any insight.

If you are lucky then your Mom has NPH... normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. It can cause symptoms similar to dementia and problems with gait and balance. It is an increase of the fluid around the brain. The good things is, if this is the case, then they can put in a shunt to drain the excess fluid, and the symptoms subside. If caught early enough the dementia symptoms may improve as well. So do some research on Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus and hope this is what she has

    Love, deb

If it is NPH then she does not have Dementia and can live a normal, healthy, clear thinking life. Scary as it sounds, the conditon is curable, unlike dementia. Good luck!

    Love,
    Martha
