Wink One Year Later - Thank you!

I posted on this board in May 2011 when my mother was diagnosed with dementia. It was one of the most tumultuous times in my life (and I suppose hers - but the sweet part is that she can't remember anything from 5 minutes ago, let alone a year!) There were two geri psych unit stays before placing her in a Sunrise Facility on a secured floor where she has been for the last 13 months without incidence. I finally broke through my brick wall 5 months ago when I joined an Alzheimer's Support Group. I felt that I was ready, willing and able to listen and respond to others as well as share my experiences. This board, with you veterans, does just that, as I browse through the threads over a year later. Bravo! Not all areas have "live" support groups and not all are the same (from what I understand), so a board like this can help (as it did for me). I have now accepted my Mom's condition and no longer feel guilty for something I did not cause. I am understanding the disease more by getting to know the other residents on her floor. Just like all of us are different from one another, so are people with dementia - even those who can't talk, still have light and personality in their eyes! I sometimes enjoy visiting with them more than with my Mom (it gets a bit repetitive with her). I've joined the Sunrise Team for a Sept. Alz Walk, too. My relationships with my brothers and sisinlaws have improved, too. Because I've let go of judgement, I don't think or worry about what they aren't or are doing for Mom and if they are doing something, I don't judge the "quality" of the deed. I am in a good place for now. Feels good. If I ever retire, I imagine myself volunteering! Peace, Love and Light to all!

Re: One Year Later - Thank you!

Janny, this is the post which made my day I do remember you from before and I am so very glad that you have come to terms with this disease and can find the blessing within. It is a process of acceptance and looking beyond the negative to the positive. Mom is in a sister facility also in their secure area. We got off to a great beginning, had some bumps in the middle, but now we are back on smooth sailing. I too found guidance from the support group in the early days. After that bump we have a new vibrant group again. I know many hesitate joining a support group but the benefits are worth the effort. Yep, I have my walk team started as well. I had to smile. I have to say hello to ALL the residents before I can settle down with Mom for a few minutes! There is such joy and blessings to be found. Even in the midst of all that this disease is you can find ways to enjoy the moment, give back, and find the blessing.

Thank you for letting us know how you are doing. Thank you for giving us a happy moment. I am so glad that it is all going so well for you and your Mom. Keep us updated occasionally. You are an inspiration!

Love, deb

PS.... Volunteering is always good You have a lot to give others
