Dementia - going to see a loved one

I am taking my son to see his grandmother with dementia. I don't know what to say or expect. It is my ex husbands mother and he refuses to go see her. My son wants to see her. He hasn't seen her in a long time. His cousin texted me to let me know they put her on hospice care and this is really tough on him. I've never had to deal with this but I want my son to see her. We are going by ourselves and I don't know what to say. Do we remind her who we are? I have tried to explain to him what to expect and that we are doing this for her. That just because she may not remember us it doesn't mean she didn't love us. Anyone who might be able to give some advice or do's and don'ts please reply.

How old is your son? It is difficult at any age, but my suggestions would vary depending on his age.

Just sit with her, rub her hand, and visit. She probably won't remember much but will enjoy the visit.
