    distal socket/stump space

    Hi

In lower limb prosthetic socket fabrication and fitting. is there a rule for deciding the space between socket and stump at the distal part. We had a discussion and no one confirmed evidence based answer and explanation.
the most common practice around here is to leave 2 cm of space and the common explanation for that is that when weight bearing the space will disappear by the stump sliding down and provide full contact surface.

Could you please provide me with the right information. with the reference.

    Many thanks
