Question 2nd toe amputation?

Hello. Ive had a crush injury to my second left toe...very stiff and
painful. I'm 62, but healthy and's been suggested that
I have this painful 2nd toe amputated, leaving only a stump.
Has anyone on this site lost a 2nd toe...what are long term
outcomes? For example, I'v been warned that the big toe will
in time bend inward to fill the vacant areal;;

Thanks for your comments...suggestions.

Re: 2nd toe amputation?

Hi Ruthanna,
4 Years ago I have the 2nd toe on my left foot amputated. I am diabetic, the toe got broken and developed gangrene.

I don't have a "stump" where the toe was, it's a even cut. Yes the big toe has bent towards the empty space. When you first look at my foot you can't really tell I have a toe missing. I never wearing sandals so no one sees my feet so that's really no big deal for me, personally.

For about 2 years after the amputation I had phantom toe pains often. These past 2 years they have almost stopped. I can now tell the weather via my missing toe area believe it or not. The site hurts like the dickens 2 days before rain or snow comes LOL!

Hope this has helped some.. if you have anymore questions just ask

Re: 2nd toe amputation?

My doctor has also recommended considering amputation of my right second toe. It was injured many years ago and has continued to contract (like a hammer toe). My concerns are the same as yours. In addition, I now have those voiced in the one reply to your question I've seen, i.e., phantom pain for 2 years followed by pain prior to rain and snow. Maybe I should just keep my unsightly, bumpy toe!

Hopefully, you will get more responses to help us with our decision-making. : )
