Re: Panic attack status, fear it's ALS

No familial history, James. And I did make an appointment to see a neurologist on the 17th of November. I'm hoping to hear from my therapist/counselor this week to start addressing my fears.

I understand that my fears are irrational but just like any other mental illness, I do not choose to feel or think this way. I wish I could just turn it off but I can't. Now, I am convinced that the weakness in my foot is attributed to ALS and I cannot stop the worry until I hear from a neurologist that it is not. I have a very, very long three week wait and I'm just praying they can put my mind at ease.

Re: Panic attack status, fear it's ALS

Operaghost gave some sound rationale advice. You are correct though, you know the chance of it being ALS is about the same as a meteorite striking you, however you can't help the way you feel.

Once you see a neurologist and they test your reflexes then the chances will be equivalent to that of a purple meteorite striking you (if there is such a thing as a purple meteorite).

Just be forewarned that after the neurologist tells you it is not ALS you will feel better for a day. Then you will start to think that the doctor did not do a complete test. You will then seek out another doctor.
I am just saying this because that is the way it usually works.

It will take time and you will slowly realize that you have wasted months worrying. By all means you need to seek out the cause of your illness, but it is not ALS. I don't mean this in a flippant way, but if you have to select a disease choose one that is not as horrible as ALS.

Oh and by all means don't go online and read any more about ALS.

Take care,

James

Re: Panic attack status, fear it's ALS

James, thank you so much for always taking time to respond. I feel that through my therapy and my meeting with the neurologist in a few weeks, I will be put on a path to never find myself here again. Having hypochondria/anxiety is a vicious, evil, tricky cycle. It's a battle against your rationale and your fear

I will keep you posted on what the neurologist says. But stick around in case I need you again. Lol

My pleasure.

Exercise moderately as you can. Take vitamins and try to get a lot of rest. You will feel much better in a few weeks.

Report back to us.

Take care,

James
