When Does the Lightheadedness END?!

To all of you who are in the same crummy boat as me:

My numbers in October were

HGB 12.8 (normal)
TIBC 480 (high)
Saturation 12 (low)
Ferritin 6 (low)

I have heavy periods and am hypo. Working on that.

Since the lab results came back I've been trying to take ferrous fumerate 106 mg (elemental) twice a day. Sometimes I only take one due to the stomach issues they cause.

My question is - when does the lightheadedness and dizziness GO AWAY!?

When I read online that people felt better "in days" I feel like smashing my computer to bits! I will feel ok one day and get my hopes up, then for six straight days I feel like I am going to hurl when I simply move my eyes from one side of my head to the other! This is insanity!

To anyone who has been in my boat, I would appreciate some feedback!

TIA,
Rose

I would like an answer too.. I was diagnosed with anemia but not low enough to take iron. I am always lightheaded. Hard to work or drive or anything. Definitely affects life!! I am always afraid to be alone in case i faint. Hope you get better soon.

Re: When Does the Lightheadedness END?!

Hi Tired, I receive my new lab results today and will post them. They should reflect a month on iron supplements.

Have you had your ferritin checked? My hemoglobin was 11 last year and 12 this year, so it's low but not abnormal according to my lab. My ferritin was a 6 however, which the doctor said could be causing my dizziness and lightheadedness.

Just in the past couple of days I have started to feel less lightheaded.

Re: When Does the Lightheadedness END?!

Just here to report my results, in case anyone in the future is looking for hope. I had my second round of labs done on 12/12 (first was done 10/20). Here are the results, all were normal:

HGB 13.3
TIBC 338
Saturation 39
Ferritin 28

I had been taking ferrous fumerate, 106 mg ELEMENTAL iron, twice a day, since 11/2. Also was eating kale and spinach until my face turned green!

I am still somewhat lightheaded. I'm not sure if I should continue the iron, maybe at a lower dose (I have some 30 mg elemental iron, chelated, so maybe I will take that). At any rate I will ask my doctor what she thinks I should do.

My lightheadedness could also be from my currently uncontrolled Hashimoto's. I will try to keep this post updated in the event that it helps someone.

Rose

Re: When Does the Lightheadedness END?!

Just an update, my ferritin is now 44. My restless leg/cramping at night problem has left me, and I am no longer shedding hair.

However the dizziness or lightheadedness is still with me every day, to some varying degree. I posted this in another of my threads but I will post it here too in case someone is searching like I am. I have been told I have a sinus infection and that is what might be causing the dizziness. I am to start on Flonase and an antibiotic and report back to my GP.

I am VERY HOPEFUL that this will indeed help the dizziness as I have been suffering from this symptom since mid-October. I was very bummed when my ferritin was rising but my lightheadedness was still with me. Now I have hope!

That's great that you're getting better! I started 325 mg today and it bothers my stomach. don't think I can continue it but not sure what to do. Also I'm concerned about iron and heart issues. I'm 73 and concerned. But it's so good to read success stories like yours.

Re: When Does the Lightheadedness END?!

Just back to post an update as I would have KILLED to see a success story back when I was really suffering -

I am a pescatarian (eating fish only) who was diagnosed with iron deficiency last October. My ferritin was a 6. I felt dreadful. I can now report that I feel at least 50% better, and the remaining 50% of issues I attribute to Hashimoto's which I am now working to resolve using levothyroxine.

I had a D&C with a Mirena fitted in February of this year. I had continual spotting for two months so my gyno put me on Lo Lo Estrin for 2 months and since I have been off of the pills, my period is nowhere to be found. I am hoping it stays this way!

For supplements I used ferrous fumerate 106 elemental mgs, one tablet twice a day. I also ate clams as much as I could as they are very high in iron. My ferritin has gradually risen, and since April I have not taken a single iron supplement. My latest lab result on the ferritin is 77!

I think it's safe to say I am out of the woods of iron deficiency, with one last problem to work on. Just wanted to give hope to others that while it can seem like a long road, you can get there, even if you do not eat meat.

Re: When Does the Lightheadedness END?!

I'm back to post another update in case anyone else goes through what I went through and needs encouragement.

My ferritin is over 80 at this point and I have stopped the supplements.

I have also started Tirosint and have worked up to 37.5 mcgs for the thyroid issue (Hashimoto's hypothyroidism). Most of the dizziness and lightheadedness is gone!!!

The Mirena is working to control my monthly cycle and I have not had a cycle in 2 months.

Finally, I found that if I do not eat lean protein at around 10 am and again at 3 pm (for instance a chicken breast or some turkey meat - I had to go back to eating meat unfortunately) I get the same weird lightheadedness. So I'm left to wonder if I have hypoglycemia (but I do not have diabetes so this would be weird). However overall I am doing great and expect to get even better as the days progress.
