    Iron deficiency with normal RBC?

    Hi...new here. .have a question:
I have been having many unexplained symptoms for years, getting worse. I had some lab work done and everything is normal except what I would call most of the 'anemia-related' stuff: Low WBC count, low hemoglobin, low hematocrit, low MVC, low MCH, low MCHC, HIGH RDW (which is expected w/ iron-deficiency anemia,) low iron, low iron saturation, HIGH iron binding capacity (which is also expected w/ iron-deficiency anemia) and I have symptoms of it...BUT....i have a NORMAL RBC count. Is low RBC count required for the diagnosis of anemia? Everything makes sense except that....but I thought that it (low red blood cell count) was the primary determining factor of the diagnosis.

I probably can't answer your question but I can say that I think low hemoglobin is probably more of a marker in lab work. But, it's actually a combination of results as I understand it. Hopefully, someone will come in and give you a more specific answer.

Re: Iron deficiency with normal RBC?

I just read that some patients have a normal RBC count but a low hemoglobin level with iron-deficiency anemia.

I feel so fortunate to finally know what my problem is and that it should be fairly easy to treat..
    Thanks for your reply

Thank you, I read on another website that some patients do have a normal RBC count but a low hemoglobin level and that the situation occurs with iron-deficiency anemia.
One can find anything online! lol
