Question Anemic? Doctor Told Me Nothing! Help!

A few months ago I went to see a doctor because I was having some consistant problems for 3+ months. I was constantly lightheaded, occasionally passing out, shortness of breath, constantly cold, abnormally pale, and found it very hard to concentrate.
Im not one to see a doctor but after months of this is began to worry me. I saw this new doctor 4 times. He asked questions and took my blood twice.
On the last visit I was told Im anemic and need more iron. Thats all the info he gave me.
I was very confused on what this was so I had to look it up myself. He told me nothing about it, why it was caused, or what to do to make it better, nothing!
I take it this is a non serious thing then.
I did some research myself but its not enough imformation and I feel that I was given the proper information.
Is there anything I should know about this condition?
And should I see a different doctor?

    Talking

You need to go back to that Dr.& ask specific questions. Some Dr.just don't want to talk, but you can make him talk to you if you want to learn anything....

    Hi Carnie,

I could not help wondering if you have ever been diagnosed with a low thyroid function.

If you have any hidden bleeding like from the digestive system, then low iron may also be a problem. It is still required to find the source of the blood loss
and not just treat the results.

If your doc won't tell you the results of your bloodwork, then it might be time for doc number three.

    Good luck..

Hear, hear... Most doctors assume you are not taking enough iron and they don't even try to find out if you have any disorder that might be causing the anemia. Get those blood test results from your doctor and find out if your hormones were checked or if they only took a look at your hemoglobin and blood cell counts.

    Hi Janik,

Doctors who are too quick to prescribe iron supplements
can be doing their patients a disservice by delaying treatment of a chronic condition. A subsequent
blood test may look almost normal and the body continues to suffer.

If you are anemic they automatic assume Iron deficency, but it could be a number of things. My daughter had a hemoglobin of 8.2 and the pediatrician prescribed iron, instead of investigating further. My daughter ended up in the hospital 2 weeks later with a hemoglobin of 4. Make them do further test
