Arrow I need some help interpreting test results

    Need help interpreting test results

    Iron less than 5
    HBB 9.7
    HCT 31.8
    MCV 65
    MCH 19.7
    MCHC 30.5

    RETIC # 0.036
    IMMATURE RETIC FRACTION 22.5
    FARRITIN 2

I need some help interpreting these results. This was taken on 3/25/04 and the hematologist wasn’t all that helpful in explaining anything to me, just told me “your anemic”
I’m changing hematologists but it’s going to take me a few wks to get in w/ a new one.
If anyone can help me understand these results I would really appreciate it.
    Thank you so much.

There really is not much more to add to what your hematologist said. If you are a young female, it looks like maybe you have more iron going out of your system than you have coming in. Only your hematologist can tell you what is going on.

oh ok then .. so finding out what the long term effects are is not important. Finding out why this is a problem isn't important. Finding out how to not have this happen again is not important. Finding out what is going on w/ my body and how do I fix it is not important. Finding out why I'm so tired that my kids don't even feel like they have a mother is not important. A hematocrit of 2 is pretty low to just be told NOTHING.
    ugh
I find this post very insulting.

Re: I need some help interpreting test results

I am afraid that there is no way to answer your questions on this board. The information is misleading unless it is said in context of what is going on in your life, your diet, your access to medical help etc.

It is very important that you follow this up with your doctor. Any doctor can treat you for iron deficiency anemia. But the underlying causes are too many possibilities for any one on this forum to give you a good answer.

Some of the things that you need to be tested for are:
Occult bleeding in the intestines, stomach or female organs
If you use medications that cause iron loss that needs to be looked at.
If you have an autoimmune disorder, that needs to be addressed with tests for various antibodies in your blood.
If an inherited disorder is discovered such as sickle cell anemia, then your children need to be tested as well.

Things are questions that no one on this forum can answer, because we are not doctors and if we are, we can not practice medicine over the internet. Please try to get an appointment as soon as possible because if you are feeling ill, you need to be seen as soon as possible. A lot of people have low iron numbers and they do not feel ill effects from it. Take care
