    ferritin level of 3?

    Hello,

I recently had bloodwork done and my GP says my ferritin level is too low, as well as the other tests (hemoglobin, etc). She didn't seem overly concerned, just gave me prescriptions for iron, folic acid and a multivitamin. I am a 32 woman and went to the doctor because I felt fatigued and also my hair seems to be falling out too much, are these both symptoms of anemia? She didn't specifically say I was anemic, but am I?

The clinical definition of anemia is when the hemoglobin reaches a threshold lower than 12 in Women. The Ferritin is a measure of storage iron and 3 is pretty low. Storage iron is the iron that the body draws from when there is no other source of iron available. The reasons that are most common in women for anemia are child birth, heavy menstrual cycles, and intestinal or stomach bleeding. There are other reasons for anemia such as the complicated anemias that are common to special population groups. But, that information gets to overwhelming to address. It sounds like your doctor has addressed the issue for you in a proper manner.

thank you both, I will talk more to my doctor. My mother told me I had anemia as a child, had to get weekly iron shots for a couple years.
