    Iron pills and lactose-intolerant

Tonight I read the ingredients of my iron pills and found out there is lactose in them. I am lactose-intolerant, and I'm thinking the doctor didn't really think of this when he told me to just buy ferrous pills.. I'm not sure if the lactose could bother me and perhaps prevent my body from taking in the iron.. however for anyone who has the same problem, I will be finding out tomorrow.

I was told today by three different pharmacists that the levels of lactose in the iron pills, was very low. So low that it wouldn't harm me, could of course cause discomfort or whichever type of problem I was getting from consuming lactose foods. There is a liquid form supplement of iron that can be taken. Just in case anyone was curious.

just curious to know whether yoghurt gives the same benefits as milk. I cannot handle milk but yoghurt is welcome.

    Hello all,
My mom is lactose intolerant and anemic. We were not aware of iron replacements contain lactose. The blood specialist mentioned iron injections or transfusion. We will give injections a good try. She has had two injections so far. She goes once a week. Today when she see's the doc I will mention to him her problem w/lactose. I guess this is something that was not passed along in her file from her primary doc. After every shot she has told me as well as the blood specialist that she feels ill and a bit sick to her stomach. They said the shot should not make her sick, but maybe they don't know the big picture. Let me know if anyone knows about iron injections! I will keep ya posted.

Well, without having regular milk, you can lose calcium and everything else that comes along with it, but depending on what you can eat.. Like as for me. Milk is the worse dairy product for me. Eggs seem to be find, cheese too. Ice cream is a no.. It all depends on the person. It could be just one thing that your body has trouble digesting and breaking down. I know a friend of mine who cannot have any dairy, none at all. And you can always drink lactose free milk. No it's not the greatest, but it works. Yogourt is I would think a pretty good source. Check the ingredient labels and the amount of calcium and such.. But definitely find something your stomach can tolerate.
And as for injections, I have no idea. That is what my next solution is, if my results show that the pills aren't entering my body. I do know though, that the liquid form of iron is or can be lactose-free.. but for the injections? I have no clue.. but do find out about that, that definitely could cause problems for someone who cant break down the lactose. And let me know if you can.. because the injections could be in my future as well. Thanks
