    Anemic.. and everything else

I recently turned 20. Have been feeling sick for years. For the passed 5 years I have been sleeping roughly 12 hours a night when I can, I'm always tired, can't get enough sleep, I have very noticeable dark bags under my eyes, no energy, hard to breathe at times when I'm not even moving. For the passed 3 years, I have been suffering from a chronic pain in my legs (muscles only), and for the passed year it started in my arms. To the point of which some days I cant pick up a glass of water without it hurting my muscles. My legs on the other hand, prevent me from working any job where I must stand or walk around. For example... I worked as a waitress for 7 months, and by the time I got home after shift, I would have to almost crawl upstairs get myself into bed, curl up into fetal position and cry, sometimes for hours. The only help I have found, is heat. However when the heat is removed whether it be after 10 minutes or 5 hours, the pain becomes even more unbearable than before. I never thought this could link into the fact that I have a low ferritin level and diagnosed with low iron deficiency. I am now presently on 900mg of ferrous iron daily, and have been for 2 months now. No difference, no sings of it working, I feel the same. Doctor told me it could take up to 6 months for it to work, and that is of course if my body takes in the iron pills. I will be getting a blood test to see if the pills are doing the job or if I have to go deeper into it and have the iron (needles). In addition, I have lost about half my hair, not in patches but thinning. The doctors told me it was probably birth control, I found out afterwards by research that even females at the age of 10 can lose their hair due to iron deficiency, or other anemia symptoms and that usually it takes a long time to lose your hair from this. Which ticks me off, because I've probably been anemic for years and my family doctor never bothered with the blood test. And me being 20 years old and obviously not a doctor, like I would know hey maybe I'm anemic? I've been afraid and feeling completely alone until I found this site and saw that there were other people like me. I have to hide most of my feelings toward the entire basket of health issues I have, my family couldn't handle how serious it is and how serious I'm taking it. Therefore I will not build my walls up while being in here. I need answers, if anyone has anything.. I'm so tired of feeling sick And most of all so many of us have no answers, well at least I don't. Even though I travelled to see a specialist.. Anyone who experienced anything similar as I have, questions, answers, anything.. I havent had anyone to really talk to about this. It's like any other health issue.. no one understands unless they are going through it too. I'm so scared.

It sounds like you do not have a good health care facilitator. I won't even refer to that person who is treating you as a doctor. However, even low grade anemia can cause body aches and pains. There are immune disorders that will cause the low iron and the chronic fatigue and muscle pain. Heat may feel good when you are using it and then make your aches and pains worse when you stop. You might try ice packs and get better relief. Of course use them sensibly and don't give yourself frost bite. If you possibly can, get a doctor to run immunology and thyroid tests on you. Almost everything you talked about sounds like low thyroid and you need a complete panel. Doctors do not often think of young people as having low thyroid problems unless they are big as a house.
People of color also have a tendency towards sickle Cell anemia which also causes the symptoms you describe, but any one can have sickle cell. Those symptoms are yellow eyes, chest pain, fatigue, abdominal pain, flu like symptoms, aches and pains especially in the legs, blood in urine, excessive urination, excessive thirst. I saw your other post and you definitely need to have your doctor recommend an iron supplement that does not have lactose in it. That would impair anyone from receiving the benefits of the iron even if they were not lactose intolerant, The experts say not to take iron with any milk products. Period.

    Hello...Dsoul....Welcome....

It's ....Ok....to be scared.....or should i say normal....and being younger sometimes...is worse....in my opinion.....because it seems doctors put people in categories with age groups....but there are always exceptions....

Probably the hardest part is waiting for results....inbetween testing....

If you feel that it's more than iron....I would defintely....get a second opinion...from another doctor.....

This board if for support...please write as often as you need to.....ask all your questions....

    Re: Anemic.. and everything else

Thank you both for replying.. The main thing is, I couldn't believe when I read that people were suffering from leg pain. Perhaps my chornic leg pain is due to me being anemic. I've been on a high for the passed 24 hours, searching everything I can find on anemia, the symptoms and the different types. Doctors tend to not tell you anything, like they did with me. I have so many thoughts running through my mind at this point that I don't even know where to begin. Or what to even type. I'm actually speechless. I did find out however, that the lactose in the iron pills isn't a big enough amount to due any harm to any lactose-intolerant person. There is a liquid supplement I could take.. Worse senario is that I continue my sore stomachs from the lactose, which at this point I can deal with. My main issue is the pain in my legs and all the symptoms from being anemic. I always thought perhaps I was just lazy and it was normal to feel the way I do. I think it's only normal for people to want to feel good and healthy.. some of us are luckier than others. So far, I've been lucky that I don't have a severe deficiency, only low ferritin levels from what the blood test could find.
If anyone feels like just writing, I would be more than glad to read. I think sharing our pains and ideas, and knowledge can only help us all. As of now I am a beginner in this, at least from what I know. But chances are when I receive my file from the doctors office, it will show that he didn't check my iron levels. And then I will freak,.
Comments, anything... I need peace and I find it in people going through similar problems as I am..
    Please and Thank You

I forgot to add my thyroid levels.. They are normal.. well just not too low or high.. it's 1.61 and i believe its suppose to be between 0.35 - 5.00 as for the immunology test.. I suppose that's a different type of test. That I did not have done, not that I know of. But I will look into it..
    Thank you

Heh.. You don't understand how relieved I feel now. Knowing that I'm not alone. I still can't believe I read about people who have low iron, ferritin and so on also have leg pain. I was so happy and angry at the same time.. that I cried. I just hope that in months time once the iron really kicks in, I feel better. How about you? How have you been.. what's your story hun?

Well, Thank you for responding.. That must be tough on you. I've felt like this for 6 years now, which is long enough.. but you've been feeling this way for much longer and that saddens me. I suppose you just have to keep your head up high and hope to god there is a solution out there. I know doctors can't be depended on, you have to find your own answers by searching the net and medical books, that has been my only savior so far.. Please do take care, I wish you the best..
