It takes approximately 3-6 months for maximum results depending on the amount of anemia and the effects on your oxygen levels. Of course it also has to do with what is causing the anemia in the first place as to how fast the therapy will work. Sometimes just knowing that it is being looked into helps the emotional side of feeling better.

Thanks very much for the response

its only been a month for me, and i havent really seen improvements in the fatigue, so its comforting to know that it takes a long period of time

    thanks again

WOW, I feel better within a day of taking a good high dose of Iron.

What is your dosage? Are you getting enough?

A good Iron to take is Chromagen Forte 151mg. It can only be prescribed by a doctor but when my doctor put me on it I was feeling great a day later.

Taking a small amount of Iron isn't going to make much of a difference early on, it takes a long time.

im on a small dosage of iron i think they're 300mg palafer pills, 1 pill daily.
you really felt better a day later? doesnt the body need time to digest the iron, and then produce hemoglobin?

yes, and it takes time, but I have no idea why I always feel better starting Iron after a day or so. Strange!

You might want to bring it up with your doctor at your next apppointment that you're still feeling fatigue and weakness. You should have felt improvement by now. It could be that your doctor is trying a very low dose of iron to see if that will be enough for you. He may have to adjust that amount.

I don't think so, it is not all in my head. I seriously take Chromagen Forte at 151mg and as soon as I take it a day later I start feeling a bit better. Actually the doctor told me he thought I would so I don't think it is the placebo affect.

Remember an iron supplement can be extremely helpful to some and to others it can be poison, so only do as your doctor recommends for you. I always feel more tired and sick when I have to have iron supplement. I always have to weigh the benefit of the iron supplement to the cost of the negative side effects. I believe part of my body is allergic to iron itself!

Re: how long will it last?

The iron tablets caused me stomach ache, nausea, constipation and miserable. I'm taking some iron rich food. Would my Cholesterol shoot up at rocket high?

How long you can leave the low iron, low ferritin in your life? Anyone here has that low forever? Would it cause damages to other organs?

Would like anyone can contribute 2 cents input. Thank you.

    Pika.

Re: how long will it last?

When I take my iron like I'm supposed to, I feel better by the next day too. It's definitely not a placebo affect.

    thephil,
Have you talked to your doctor yet about your iron dosage? I take 325 mg of ferrous sulphate 3 times a day. If I get lazy and skip some doses for a few days, all the fatigue starts coming back.

    Merimac,
That's awful that you feel worse after taking it. Maybe you could try a different type of iron. What does your doctor say about it? Are you taking your iron every day or are you putting it off for a long time between dosages because of the negative side effects?

    Pika,
I don't know all the long term consequences of low ferritin. But here are a few. Also, I don't know what organs it would affect, if any.

    May develope RLS
    Chronic and crashing fatigue
Low work performance and exercise capacity, even with mild iron deficiency
Possible tachycardia (rapid heart rate) during exercise or work
    Possible depression (especially in women)

    I'm sure there's more.
