How fast can hgb drop w/ occult bleeding?
I have been diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia and am currently taking a liquid ferrous sulfate supplement due to GI distress wtih the pills (although these still kill my stomach). I went on niferex about 2 months ago, and started feeling really great about a month later. I could run easily and generally felt fine.

The past few weeks, though, I have started feeling tired again. I also seem to be losing exercise endurance. Assuming that my blood loss is due to occult GI problems (even though I had negative scopes, doc said it could be microulcers), how quickly could things turn south without me seeing blood pouring out? I am wondering if the fact that I have started runnning again has caused an increase in bleeding, but I'm not sure if it's been long enough to really have an effect on my levels, given that I haven't seen any blood...

Re: How fast can hgb drop w/ occult bleeding?
That is a good question. I can only answer it generally, though. Occult bleeding is that bleeding which is hidden or not seen by normal means. Occult bleeding is usually not very much which is why it is usually hidden. If your body normally makes adequate supplies of blood cells, you might never get past the low range of normal. If your bones do not make new blood cells faster than your blood loss, you can show a dramatic drop in a month or two. Beyond that general information , the medical community would have to do daily blood draws to tell how dramatically the blood cells were being used up compared to what was being regenerated. The cycle from beginning to end of red blood cell formation and degeneration is about 120 days.
