~*~I have Anemia and.....~*~

a lot of other things that are just going wrong in my body. I found out I have anemia when blood test were done on me the day before my knee surgery due to an accident I had at home. I was told that my hemoglobin was a 7 when the normal range for women is 12-15. I guess that explains why my gums bleed at certain times like when I have my menstruation (which is very heavy at times). I now get a lot of headaches, heartburn, dizziness, this weird feeling in my throat when I swallow food, some shortness of breath, severe fatigue, etc. It's horrible. I'm scared to find out what is wrong me, yet I want to know. I go for a doctors appointment on Tues, July 3rd.

Any suggestions???

Your doctor will put you on iron supplements, if you aren't already taking them.

They will suspect your periods are causing the anemia. This is relatively common for younger women in their child-bearing years to have anemia from the blood loss from periods. However, having anemia can make your periods even heavier.

They also might want to do an endoscopy (where they look down your throat into your stomach) and a colonoscopy to see if there is any GI bleeding.

I am 33, have heavier periods, but am going in for an endoscopy/colonoscopy this week to check for GI bleeding. Normally, doctors would just think it was because of my periods, but they want to make sure (I do too).

I have iron deficient anemia due to Celiac Disease. I had been misdiagnosed for quite a few years. I too had the shortness of breath and fatigue but feel much better now that I'm gluten free and on iron supplements.

Good luck!

Not all anemias are caused from low iron. I have hemolytic anemia (normal every day hemoglobin os about an 8) and the doctors are still baffled as to what is causing it. In addition, I also have iron overload. Do not take any iron until you speak with a doctor. Good luck

You're absolutely right Singscooks, not all anemias are from lack of iron. I went to the doctor and he suspects that my anemia isn't from lack of iron. It just looks like it. He's having my blood checked for Thalassemia. But I don't feel like it's Thalassemia after doing some internet research about it on my own. It says it's genetic from one parent and I've never heard of anyone in my family, let alone my parents having thalassemia. But I will wait for the results. Plus he strongly feels I'm hypothyroid. My mom has that. I'll know that results to my thyroid tomorrow.

Iron overload or Hemochromatosis (one of the many things I have) is almost always genetic and no one in my family has it. Sometimes things/people are just anomolys. Good luck.

singscooks, I'm curious do you know if you have primary hemochromatosis or secondary?

Not sure. No physician has ever labeled it as anything other than hemochromatosis. What is the difference? i cannot recall at the moment.

Thanks.

Well I always thought there was only one kind, the hereditary kind.

My uncle has it but neither of my parents carry the gene. After I read your post I looked it up and it said primary is hereditary and therefore inherited and secondary hemochromatosis can be caused by anemia, alcoholism and other disorders. There is also juvenile and neonatal. I just didn't realize that there was more than one type.

They think mine is caused from the transfusions I have had. A total of 5 in my lifetime. However, other than bleeding there is no way to lose iron so once it is stuck in there it's stuck. I am very anemic too.

Well I was definitely given my results for my thyroid and I'm definitely hypothyroid. So I was prescribed synthroid for that. As for the rest of the results regarding my anemia, I'm still waiting.
The doctor said it takes like 2-3 weeks to get results for the thalassemia.

Re: ~*~I have Anemia and.....~*~

If you check in with the thyroid board, you will find some people discussing low ferritin. If it turns out that your condition is caused by Iron deficiency, you may find the posts useful. It is common to have low ferritin/anemia in hypo conditions.

If iron deficiency is not the cause, then there are some other explantions.

One concerns hypothyroidism and reduced Erythropoiesis. Erythropoiesis is the process by which red blood cells are produced. The deceased erythropoeisis reslulted in reduction in red blood cell mass. I don't really understand it thouroughly, since it is very technical hematolig/endocrinology jargon.

See for instance,

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Vol 40, 211-220, 1975
Erythropoiesis and erythropoietin in hypo- and hyperthyroidism

http://jcem.endojournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/40/2/211

This may give your dr a starting point if your tests don't seem to be conclusive.

Thank you Sparkles, I will go to the thyroid board to research some things. I know it will be helpful.
