    Low ferritin - anemia?

Hi I have just got my test results back, it showed that my ferritin level was way low at 8 (reange 20-250), yet my haemoglobin level seems normal it was 13.1 and then 12.4 (range 12-16). Could it be iron deficiency anaemia eventhough my haemoglobin is in the range? What could be causing my ferritin level to be low?
    Please post back, thanks.

You can have iron deficiency yet not have anemia. Anemia is the "end stage" of iron deficiency. At some point you probably have normal iron stores (ferritin) and they have gradually depleted. The further they deplete, the less stores you have, and eventually you will end up with anemia. I didn't get anemia until my ferritin level was about 5. Some people get anemia much sooner than that, some may not get it at all.

In a female, the first culprit in iron deficiency is menstrual losses. If menstrual loss doesn't seem to be the culprit, the next cause is loss of blood (gradual) from the GI tract--colon/stomach, etc. If that's not the cause they they start looking at malabsorption issues like celiac disease. I think it the U.S. with all the fortified foods and common meat consumption, diet is *usually* not an issue with iron deficiency, but it can be for vegetarians. Especially women.
