Low ferritin, No anemia, No symptoms

My Dr. said with a ferritin of 12 and hemoglobin of 13, I should not be getting symptoms. Is this true? There are so many thoughts on this.

Doctors think you don't get symptoms until you are moderately anemic. I had a ferritin of 5 and a HGB of 11.7 and my doctor said it wasn't an "excuse" for my fatigue. That is so not true.

I think you can feel fairly bad with a ferritin of 12.

I had this same thing happen 2 Ferritin and 8.5 Hgb and felt fine until I bottomed out one day. Your tolerance to anemia is proportional to the rate of development. If it is a rapid onset anemia the symptoms are more profound than slowly developing like in my case. So I don't quite understand why the way up is so terrible with a much higher iron level than my body is even use to. You would think I/we would feel great. I really don't get it or know what I truly believe about the ferritin symptoms that many of us have. And....your right many doctors say it's not the ferritin. Who and what do you believe? My symptoms keep improving along with the ferritin rising. This I know for sure! FLFLOWERGIRL

I also agree that a higher ferritin level is always better. A person just never knows when that extra Iron level is really needed.

Re: Low ferritin, No anemia, No symptoms

You feel the way you feel and no doctor can tell you otherwise, unless it's not related to ferretin and is instead related to something else and the ferretin is only a symptom of that 'something' else. Besides, a lot of doctors simply parrot what they were taught at university and a lot of them havne't updated their 'knowledge' much since then. It's taken me a minimum of 7 years to get to the bottom of what's wrong with me and it shouldn't take that long!!

When my ferretin was at an 8 i need to have a lay down on the sofa after eating breakfast as i simply couldn't make it to my bedroom to get dressed and that was after a good nights sleep!!

As my ferretin climbed and i got to 61 i didn't feel the same tiredness as when my ferretin was at an 8, but felt a different form of tiredness. I ended up being diagnosed with a thyroid condition, which i've likely had unknowingly for a number of years.

So keep up with the iron supplements and if your ferretin rises and you still don't feel better then it's obviously due to something else. That's when you begin a whole new batch of testing. Oh what joy
