    Question New to Anemia

I found out about 2 months ago my blood was low - 9.1 The cause is basically I had Gastric Bypass 7 years ago and now I am not absorbing Iron from my food and the vitamins I have been taking is no longer enough.
I started taking Childrens vitamins with iron (Flinstones - because regular vitamins don't stay long enough in my stomach to be absorbed properly)

I have shortness of breath, am a little tired and have terrible legs cramps at night. I also have the worst craving for ICE. I am constantly chomping on ice.
Someone told me months ago I may be anemic because I was always eating ice but I thought they were just saying that. Does anyone else has this problem? What causes you to want ice soooo much when you are anemic?

After 2 months my blood has gone up to 10.1 but I don't really see any difference in the cramps, or Ice cravings, or breathing. This past weak I had an episode where I got a burst of pins and needles in my arm an upper back (shoulder blade) I was told that this can be caused by not enough oxygen getting to a certain part of the brain. Any thoughts on that symptom?

They do make iron supplements for people in your situation. The Iron also has IF Intrinsic Factor in the supplement along with B-12 and Vit C. My sister also had GB and takes this form and it seems to work well. Let me know if you want more info on it.

I had the craving for ice too and like you I didn't think that it was anything to really worry about. Boy, was I wrong. I don't know how to explain it but the body has a craving for non-food items. Mine was only ice. Shortly after beginning iron supplements it went away for good.

Regarding your pins and needles symptom, I'm really not sure. It could be many things. I had/have this symptom in my hand, face and foot sometimes. It last for months and stops. My Neuro said anxiety but I know that's not true. I have a few symptoms that came with the anemia but did not leave with the anemia being resolved. It's strange. Hope you find your answers. Wink Re: New to Anemia

Hi! I'm a newbie too. Here's my story- I have always been iron deficient but not anemic as well as heavy menstrual cycles. A couple of years back the gave me iron pills- I believe ferro-sequol (excuse the spelling) they were over the counter and made me sick, I eventually stopped taking them and started eating more fiber etc. Then last June, I went on Seasonique, so I would not get menstrual as much. Well for the past couple of months, I have been tired, I work 6 days, so on the 7th day I couldn't get out of bed. (plus it was a different job in my company) I was tired a lot, weak, I was spotting, I basically thought I was stressed, burnt. Well one day, I thought I was losing it, crying, could barely make it home I had to call my mom to stay with me. I never ask for help, so she knew something was wrong. From the minute I walked into the dr office, he knew, he said you need a blood transfusion, I bursted into tears, he said ok first we will get blood work and I will prove to you. On Thursday, I got my bloodwork done and that night he called me and said I need a blood transfusion and if I didn't go to hospital within 72 hours I would be dead-(if I bled even sooner) Well I went to hospital, I had a hemoglobin of 2.5 and a hemocrit of 10, they could not believe at the hospital how I was a live they called me a medical miracle. They said I shouldnt have been talking or walking at those levels. well, I had 5 bags of blood, I was released at a 7.9. I started at a hemotologist with iron infusion therapy 2x week on May 5th in addition to prescribed repliva 21/7 1x day, vit c 1x day, multi v 1x day. Later, I needed b12 shots. They said it was either something gynocogical or internal causing it. Well, I am happy to say my iron is at a 12.4 as of today, I am having 1 treatment a week and the B12 shot is on maintenance now, 1x week. I do have fibroids 3 12cm, 5 cm, and 2.4 cm. I had a consult scheduled for last week about my options but the doctor cancelled- I go in July. I am glad to know the possible cause. It all happened so fast, I didnt realize how serious it was until everyone knew who I was and kept saying how are you alive. I am very grateful. The thing that touched me was a hospital worker who came up to me and said I am 35 like you and I have 2 kids, and i do not take my iron pills, you made me start taking them because i want to live and be there for my kids. By the way, the doctors said Seasonique saved my life, because I didn't lose as much blood! I hope this helps!-

Hey Thanks for the info I thought I was crazy craving the ice thing. I also hav a thing for smells that would about make me sick before- I could sit at a gas pump all day long and smell the gas - They would probably charge me as high as gas is!!!

What is it your sister uses. Is it a prescription? I haven't been back for another blood check yet. They said wait a month. I don't have periods. I had Breast cancer at age 36 and went into early menopause by 39. So they ruled that out fast. I think I am doing a bit better. Not so much shortness of breath. But still chomping Ice. I hope my teeth hold on until this gets straight. Thank God we have an Ice machine (we have a commercial fishing business) that produces soft ice.

Let me know where I can get what your sister is using.

    Thanks again
    Denise

    Re: New to Anemia

Thank God you went when you did. You must have felt terrible I know I have a hard time with breathing when mine went to 9. I do not have periods at all. I had Breast Cancer 17 yrs ago and went into earlymenopause and they was the end of that. (although I did about bleed to dead 2x's because out of the blue my body decided I was to young to be through menopause and I almost hemoraged) BUt that was a long time ago and doesn't have anything to do with now. I have to go back in about a couple weeks to get my blood checked again. Been taking Centrum for Kids with iron(taste better than Flintstones) And don't have shortness of breath as much.
Let me know how you are doing.

    Re: New to Anemia

NCNanny54--As soon as I got iron in me a couple of days I quit eating ice. I hate ice now.

Yes, it is a script that was prescribed by her Bariatric Specialist. It is Foltrin, and I think that is the generic name, don't know for sure. There are brand names that may also be available or that your doc may be more familiar with which are; Contrin, Fergon Plus and Trinsicom. It is iron, Vit-C, IF Intrinsic Factor and B-12. $19.59per #30. But if it works any amount of money is worth it! Good luck to you. FLFLOWERGIRL

    Re: New to Anemia

The pins and needles feeling can be a sign of low B12, which should be checked on you as well.

My feet and hands were so numb that I was afraid. I also had muscle jerks which scared me to death. Both things went away after a month of B12 shots and prescription strength folic acid.

I found a new gyno, he put me in the hospital. I had a d& c and multiple myoectomy. While in surgery my hemoglobin dropped and I needed 2 blood transfusions, he was only able to remove the large fibroid and a polyp due to heavy bleeding. I was in hospital for 5 days, have 11 staples soon to be removed, I needed addl transfusions while in hospital. Just recovering----------------Thanks for the concern.
