    What to expect

I have been reading the boards for the last 6 mos. Ever since I was diagnosed with anemia hgb 9.0 and told to take iron supplements. I took polysaccaride iron (niferex) for 4 mos and my hgb went to 8.8. I then had 4 iron injections over 1 mos and the hgb went to 8.0. My doc sent me to a hematologist who found my ferratin was 1-2 and gave me iv ferraclit x 5 weeks. After the infusions my ferritin was 41 and hgb was 10.6. I have been taking the building blocks (zinc. calcium, vit b's) orally and have checked my hgb at work. Last check was 12.0 yay! Today at my 3 mos appt my hgb was 11.6 so I thought I was OK. later my Ferretin came back at an 8. So here I go again for 4 infusions then wait 3 mos for a recheck.

Am I the only one in this boat? Since my gastric bypass I cannot seem to absorb iron.

please respond if you are in the same boat,

    Pupcake

Take the iron with a tablet of glutamic acid or betaine hcl, and some vitamin c/orange juice

The glutamic acid or betaine simulate the hydrochloric acid your stomach used to produce.

    Watch your B12 as well.

    Welcome to the boards!

No, pupcake--I am not in your same boat, but I would like to respond anyway. You cannot take oral therapy at the same time as IV, I'm sure you know this. Just FYI, they do make an oral iron that has B-12, IF-- Intrinsic Factor and Vitamin C already added for different needs. I know the Poly Iron is absorbed differently than other types of iron but don't know if it would be the right one for a GB patient. Do you see a bariatric specialist? Are you also on a B-12 IM schedule? My sister had GB, I know there are different types which makes things a little different, in her case she takes Foltrin with all the above in it and it seems to be working well for her. Good luck to you and keep us post. FLFLOWERGIRL

I have been very curious about L-glutamine (which is glutamic acid) for those issues related to absorption of iron and the IBS-like distress that iron and other supplements can cause.

Can you tell me more about it? How long does it take to start having an effect once you start taking it? I was taking a supplement that had it as a main ingredient, but it also had ginger which was too stimulating for me. It seemed to work, but I had to stop it too soon.

    Thanks.

    Re: What to expect

ChickieLou - sorry i can't answer your question, but wanted to add that when i first began taking the iron supplement i was originally on, my doctor would get me to take a pill prior to taking the iron. This pill contain Lysine and Glutamine. I know what Lysine does, but i could never totally understand where the Glutamine fitted in. I am guessing it was something to do with helping my iron absorbtion rate. (i'm sure my doctor had told me at the start, but it was sort of information overload :P )

    Re: What to expect

All I know is that people with IBS take glutamine because it supposedly restores the mucousy lining in the intestine. I am also reading that it is in the same family as MSG, so there is a "hypothetical" warning on it for people who are allergic to MSG, although there have not been any reported cases of allergies to it.

I would like to try it sometime because my tummy can be so "off" sometimes for extended periods, fine other times. Maybe I'll test it on my guinea pig... er... husband. He's got a bad stomach always.

    Re: What to expect

It converts to hydrochloric acid in the stomach, replacing what is missing, and thus hydrolises the iron to an absorbable state

Betaine Hcl is the best one to get.

Some vitamin c (as in orange juice) also helps

    Re: What to expect

As i said, mine was incorporated within my Lysine tablet, but i still ended up getting IBS symptoms after taking my iron supplement, so my doc added iron phosphate tablets and they solved my IBS tummy/toilet dramas
