    Low RBC....but just the RBC

What does it mean when the RBC count is low (or at the lowest in range) but the hemoglobin and the hematocrit are normal? I have had 3 blood tests like this so far? Is there something that should be checked next?

    RBC 4.18 L (4.2-5.3)
    Hgb 13.6 (12-15)
    HCT 39.7 (36-45)
    Platelets H 410 (150-400)

    RBC 4.28 (4.2-5.3)
    Hgb 13.2 (12-15)
    Hct 39.2 (36-45)

    RBC 3.98 L (4.2-5.3)
    Hgb 13.2 (12-15)
    Hct 39.2 (36-45)

Could low thyroid cause this? I have lots of fatigue that I thought was caused by low thyroid. What else would cause it? Should I even be concerned? Any suggestions welcome........

No one knows why only RBC would be low?

Your blood work looks good, a rbc that is only a couple points low is nothing to be concerned about since the hct/hgb are normal.

I wonder, then, why my doctor said something is not quite right (no further explanation at this point) and we need to check CBC with differential again in a month. I just thought it must be the RBC as nothing else seemed off?

Hopalong - I have this same thing! I don't get it. Even when my hemoglobin was 14 after really taking iron faithfully, my RBC only ever gets to 3.98. So strange...My hema doesn't sweat it, though. I guess I shouldn't. But it does make you wonder...

Re: Low RBC....but just the RBC

Well, just found out that what my doctor said was not quite right was the creatinine and GFR. The creatinine looks in normal range but with the equation to calculate the GFR, it is too high. My GFR (kidney function) has gone from 93% to 88% to 73% (this is where the doctor said something is not quite right) to 67% on the test this week. I am taking Celebrex for arthritis and maybe this is part of the problem? I have now read the with declining kidney function, the red blood cell production may decrease as the hormone responsible for RBC production is in the kidney. The kidneys can detect low levels of oxygen in the blood. When this happens, the kidneys respond by releasing a hormone called erythropoietin, which then travels to the red bone marrow to stimulate the marrow to begin RBC production. If kidney function slows down............this MAY affect RBC production. So I have to check levels again in 5 weeks. I still haven't heard back from my doctor about the latest drop.......wonder if I will?
