    trying to understand all this

    Hi,

Thank you for reading and for any help in advance!!!!

I was recently diagnosed with iron def anemia... I feel like my dr isn't doing enough, but maybe she is. This is what she has done this far: Blood work including tests below, started me on iron 325 x3 per day, blood in stool test (came back neg), and follow up in 6 weeks... appt is in one week. I still feel horrible and I'm very worried that she isn't taking this seriously... but maybe I'm over reacting.

If you think you can shed some light on this for me, please do.

I'm am a 120#, 31 year old female, mother of 3 (the youngest is 3 years old.) I am hypo-thyroid but am in range currently taking .125 synthroid. Was hyper 11 years ago then had radio-active iodine back then and have not had problems keeping it under control. My periods are 3 days and very light.

These are some of my levels:

    Iron serum 26
    unsaturated ibc 464
    calculated total TIBC 490

    Ferritin 4.7
    Folic acid 19.54
    B-12 1405

    WBC 4.3
    RBC 4.60
    Hemoglobin 9.4
    Hematocrit 36.2
    MCV 78.5
    MCH 21.0
    MCHC 29.0
    RDW 16.2
    platelet count 271
    neutrophils# 2.31
    neutrophils% 53.7
    lymphocytes# 1.50
    lymphocytes% 34.9
    Eosinophils# 0.05
    eosinophils% 1.1
    baso# 0.02
    baso% 0.5
    atypical lymphs# 0.11
    atypical lymphs%2.4

I also have a metabolic panel which levels were all normal except creatinine 0.59

I would take the iron and if the levels don't increase then look at other options. I would in my opinion say your dr is on the right path.

Question Re: trying to understand all this

    Thank you SO Much!

I go back to the doctor this week... Is there any questions I should ask? and you don't think I need a specialist or anything--this is pretty new to me and I really don't know. Is this fairly common?

    I really appreciate you help.

Re: trying to understand all this

Hi, I don't know that much about it, but I was often anemic growing up, but I had heavy periods. However, after menopause, my iron was also 19. Dr didn't seem concerned. Told me to take iron. I did and it went up but very slowly. My girlfriend on the other hand was very anemic. Her dr ordered tests including a colonoscopy. It was normal. She took iron and her blood was tested again and it was normal. It scared her enough though to change her eating habits of her hubby bringing home fast food every night.

Re: trying to understand all this

Iron deficiency anemia based onferratin level.... I was is same situation, but my insurance required that they try the oral iron first. I discussed with doc and she had her people call and get approval for iron infusions... Had two and already feeling better... Be proactive, dont wait..... Ferratin indicates stored iron levels and can be very serious...

    Mel52 and Diwizi,

Thank you both. This is all so new... My friends and family are split some blow it off and say it is nothing--anemia is very common, and others go the other way and say, this is serious and you need answers, fast!!! I feel really really bad and just want to know as much as I can so I ask the right questions and get to feeling better.

    Thanks again!!

    Mindy

Re: trying to understand all this

Google it and you will see that just the low ferritin can cause symptoms such as chest pain, heart palpitations, labored breathing, muscle aches, extreme fatigue, and kidney failure. My ferritin was a 7, when my doctor checked it..... I was having all of these and more.... I had gastric bypass and most likely will never raise my level with oral meds.... The iv isnt bad... But it does take about two hours total.... I will have 8 infusions and then will see..... My sons and their wives are all MD's, and they told me it could not cause the heart arrythymia, but it can and does..... They are surgeons and snesthiologists... Smile but i have a really good internal specialust who was their teacher inmed school.... But do research it... My hemoglobin, and all of myother numbers were inthe normal range, allbut the ferritin....
