    Need Advice - Lifestyle Changes Until Iron Rises?

    I was just diagnosed as anemic yesterday.

    I was expecting Thyroid issues because my symptoms are brittle nails, cold all the time, fuzzy thinking, cognitive issues, inability to concentrate, irregular heartbeat (occasionally - a few times a week,) and lots of fatigue.

    My scores are:
    Iron 23
    TIBC 459
    Saturation 5
    Ferritin 3

    I had an iron shot yesterday and am supposed to have them every 2 weeks for 2 months.

    My question is should I temporarily alter my lifestyle until my iron increases? I have been trying to get back into running but I am worried about the strain that might be putting on my body and especially my heart.

    I would really appreciate any advice you might have to offer.

    Hi,
    I think you should take it easy a few months, How long does your dr say til you feel better?
    I had iron infusion for 6 hrs last tuesday, I was feeling terribly sleepy most of day after a rest nite of sleep. Finally started to regain some energy and feeling better. Not sure what
    my numbers show, but my hgb was 10. And he said my iron stored is low. Wish you luck

    Thanks Gail. Thanks for the frame of reference too. My HGB is 9.6 so it sounds like we are in the same situation.

    As to your question about running, if you're not too fragile, running, even a little for at least five minutes a day will be of great help for restoring you hemoglobin. It would stimulate your appetite, and meat, liver, beef, pork, or chicken (in that order... because each one has more iron in a descending order) would actually help your heart and lungs. Often when people feel down like it sounds you are, exercise helps immensely to restore health. Just don't overdo it, and, you can walk, play tennis, or do any exercise that manes demands on your body. Good Luck!!
