Diareah when taking a 14mg Iron supplement, does it ever stop?

Hi,

I am a 27 year old male and have MS.
I learnt i had LOW red cell count, LOW white cell count , lymphocyte count and borderline low haemoglobin,
my serum ferritin levels were quite low too:

White cell count = 3.8 10*9L - Range = 4 - 11
Red cell count = 4.18 10*12L Range = 4.5 - 6.5
Mean compusc. haemoglobin (MCH) = 32.5 pg range = 27 - 32
Lympocyte count = 1.1 - 10*9/L , Range = 1.3 - 4
Haemoglobin estimation - 136 - g/L - Range = 130 - 180
B12 and Folate were both high again.
Serum ferritin - 66 ng/mL - range = 30 - 400

so as my b12 and folate levels were high and my red/white cells low and ferritin fairly low, i started taking an iron 14mg supplement for the last four days to boost my red/white cells

the first 2 days i didnt have any bowel movements (BM) when i normally have one BM a day, on the third day of 15mg iron tablet i had a huge loose BM, then this afternoon i had a very runny/liquid BM coming out very fast/squirty, it was 3-4 separate loads!
so after reading the side effects of iron supplements, it seems gastrointestinal symptoms are common, like diarrhea

this is the iron tablet i've been taking:

Ingredients
Cellulose,Dicalcium Phosphate ,Ferrous Fumarate ,Maltodextrin ,Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose ,Magnesium Stearate ,Silicon Dioxide ,Glycerol ,Colour (Iron Oxide)

So i understand it takes months to raise your iron/ferritin levels but i can't continue with these infrequent/irregular diarrea BM's
plus im scared of having an accident if im out the house.

i was wondering when taking an iron supplement do these diarrhea BM's continue or does your body get used to the iron supplements and you have regular normal consistency BMs?
or is it different for each person? as maybe my body just can't take iron supplements, even though my ferritin is sub-optimal

As im considering stopping the iron tablets, but if the diarrhea eventually stops (hopefully quickly) i will continue as the anemia symptom i have of cold hands, muscle weakness will hopefully improve

i do have an appointment to see my GP but its not for 2 more weeks, so would appreciate hearing some opinions please

thanks

Re: Diareah when taking a 14mg Iron supplement, does it ever stop?

I was taking 325 MGS daily for about 4 months? I honestly can't remember how long...I had the exact same problem as you. I was beginning to think I would probably just die. I got so sick of it, switched brands and strengths. Started taking 85 mgs a day, same issue. I went on like this for about 8 months. In and out of the bathroom at least 5 times a day. My last appointment I asked my Dr. about it and he said it's normal, I said FOR 8 MONTHS? I switched to a lower dose 15 mgs I think? It stopped, just like that, gone.

This month I started thinking that I wasn't getting enough iron and I really don't want to start over with this so I switched back to the higher 85 mgs....guess what? It's back. I am in the same boat.

Everyone is different, iron effects the body different for us. From my own personal experience, I think I'm going on a year now, it didn't get better for me. :( Wish I could say different.

thanks Heather for sharing,
I have just cut down to half a 14mg iron tablet so 7mg, but i am male so hopefully this will raise my ferritin levels and prevent the constipation and diarrhea.

One thing i am curious about is the fact my diet was fairly moderate / slightly high in sea salt (organic) the past year (when on a paleo diet) so i do wonder can a moderate-high consumption of sodium deplete/lower ones iron levels?

my sodium blood results were:
Serum sodium = 143 mmol/L - Range = 133 - 146

could these sodium levels reduce my iron absorption?

I was having stomach issues with Iron even though I was taking the Easy Iron kind. Then I read about Slow Iron on these boards. I bought some from our local Walmart. It has 45 mg of Iron and doesn't upset my stomach at all. No nausea too. It's worth trying I think and only costs like $4 for 30 tablets.

Re: Diarrhea when taking a 14mg Iron supplement, does it ever stop?

I've had this problem, too. Started taking 150 mg at the recommendation of my doctor and shortly started having diarrhea of at least 5 times a day, after which I would have to give up and take some Imodium as I didn't want to visit the bathroom every hour all day every day. I wasn't absolutely sure the iron was the cause, as I do have IBS symptoms anyway, but the diarrhea just seemed so much worse than it ever had been before the iron.

Without consulting my doc, which was probably a no-no, I started taking Bifera at 28 mg but was still having some diarrhea. Then I was scheduled for a colonoscopy and EGD and had to stop taking any iron at all for 5 days before the procedure. Diarrhea MUCH better! Could be a coincidence, but I'm not eager to go back on the iron. I also bought some of the slow iron at 45 mg but have not tried it yet. I don't think I can hack the 150 mg, though. To my body it's like taking a laxative, yet my doc said iron causes constipation NOT diarrhea. I just don't know.
