Follow up yesterday after iron infusion

Had appt with hematologist yesterday after my iron infusion 3 weeks ago.
I must say it was a rather disappointing visit.
He did a CBC and my hemoglobin is up to 12 and my hematocrit is up to 38.1. That part was good news. I'm no longer anemic....barely.
He did not check my iron levels.
Told me to come back in 3 months and we'll see if my h&h are holding.

I asked him what the OPTIMAL iron and ferritin levels were that I should be aiming for. He totally dismissed that and said he's not looking at that...only the hemoglobin.
Told me not to take any iron supplements.

I also asked him about B-12. Mine is in the normal range but on the lower end and I'd like to bring it more to the higher end. He told me that was not necessary...that my level is fine where it is.

For my own curiosity I'm going to go tomorrow and have my blood drawn on my own and check my total iron and ferritin levels so ill have something to compare them to later.

I guess I just feel like the one time total dose infusion isn't going to get my ferritin up to a good level all by itself.
And just because I'm no longer anemic after the infusion doesn't mean I'm no longer iron deficient. So I guess I don't really understand all of this well enough.
I think he's taking this attitude because he totally believes the whole thing was solely caused by blood loss from heavy periods and now that I've had a hysterectomy the problem is solved.

    I guess time will tell.

Re: Follow up yesterday after iron infusion

Wow, these Dr's I have zero tolerance for, right here. I count my blessings I have such a wonderful OB and GP. This is sad and I'm sad for you. I wish these Dr's could feel how we feel for just one second.

The numbers you listed are NOT ok. They just aren't. I know you have read and know that most people don't report feeling better til their ferritin reaches 50-70's and you also know this number takes FOREVER to go up. I am at a 62 and my OB wants me to continue iron for another year. This is just not ok. Is there anyway you can get a 2nd opinion? Maybe your hysterectomy will solve the problem only time will tell but you still need to be taking iron in my humble OP.

I am so sorry Star, if you have any specific questions shoot. It's kinda late her tonight and this post just makes me upset! Grrr. I will try and form and better explanation tomorrow.

You can pull normal numbers and still be anemic, hematocrit and hemoglobin are not the only numbers that need to be relied on here!
