    iron deficiency anemia

I have a question. Does anyone know what the Drs. do if they can't get your hemoglobin back up to within normal limits? They say I have lost the ability to store iron. I have had 4 infusions and have very little results.
I'm scheduled for 8 more. I am a little alarmed because the Dr is disappointed that I haven't recovered better. How much trouble am I in here? Thanks.

    Re: iron deficiency anemia

I think there's a lot of factors to consider in the speed of "recovery". It took me 10 infusions to see results. My iron was below 3 (I guess their tests couldn't get a specific count) and my hemo was only 1 pt low. However, it didn't come up until my blood tests on my 10th week of infusions. Then it was normal. My iron was still only at 9, as I suffered from heavy, heavy periods.

Ultimately, if your hemoglobin does recover or continues to drop, they'd like do a blood transfusion.

I wouldn't be overly alarmed - if you are getting infusions you are likely seeing a hematologist for this, correct?

Do you know what the cause of your iron deficiency is?
