Question Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Open Repair

I am a 65 year old man. I have an abdominal aortic aneurysm just a hair below 5.5 plus small aneurysms in the iliac arteries. Because the aneurysm is so close to the artery leading into the right kidney, plus there is an old blood clot and other "debris" so close to the artery leading to the kidney, my surgeon said that stents would be a risky option and in all likelihood would eventually have to be replaced within 1 to 2 years with open grafts. He said if I chose the stent, if even possible, he would have to plug one of the illiac arteries. That would result in erectile dysfunction or other sexual dysfunction.

I have read that even if I have the open graft surgery, that would have an even GREATER chance of erectile/sexual function. I am devastated. I am too young to face the possibility of never having an erection ever again. I have no choice though, without the surgery the risk of rupture and death is too great. I am not afraid of the surgery. My surgeon said that there is only a 2% risk of death during the procedure. A 98% success ratio is comforting.

Are there any other males on this board who have had open graft surgery, and did it result in erectile/sexual dysfunction? If so, to what degree? I just don't understand why this type of surgery would cause erectile/sexual problems.

If anyone can shed some light, I would be so very grateful. I am looking at surgery within the next 2-3 months.
