| Lump in throat advice
I've been reading all of the posts regarding having the feeling of a lump in my throat to get some insight on why I'm having that feeling. For me it started about 6 weeks ago, out of the blue. I was at a swim-up bar when all of a sudden, it felt like someone gave me a karate chop on the front of my neck. I had to force water down my throat because I felt like I couldn't breath or swallow. After about an hour, the doctor came to my room and he suspected an allergic reaction, gave me a shot of steroid in my hip, and gave me some meds (antihistamine and relaxers) so I could sleep. I racked my brain as to what I ate/drank that day and the only thing I could come up with was that possibly I had some chlorine on my fingers while I was eating the bar snacks. Then 2 weeks later, back from my vacation, I was sitting at my desk at work when- BAM - it happened again. My coworkers suggested I go for a walk but I was thinking that I can't swallow, can't breath, how in the heck am I going to walk around the block? I decided I needed to go to the emergency room. I told the Dr. about my previous episode and she said she sees people in ER all the time after swimming with their throats swollen, etc. But since I wasn't swimming that day, what was it? The doctor there said she was almost sure it was muscle spasm/anxiety. She suggested Benadryl and Xanax if it happens again. Then 2 weeks later out of the blue it happened again! I finally went to my Dr. and he referred me to a gastroenterologist, just to rule out anything physiological. I do have a history of some acid reflux but it's not heartburn, it's been nauseasnouss/dizziness/burping constantly. I went to the gastro. and she has me scheduled next week for "the scope". She doesn't feel it's "anything serious", but just wants to make sure. The lump at the hollow of my neck goes away for a day, then is back for 2, 3, 4 days. I know most of the users here think it's anxiety and I would be relieve if it was, but after reading some other postings, it might be vocal chord or thyroid problem? My bloodwork shows all normal. I don't feel any more stressed out than usual. Should I also be going to a ENT specialist? Is it just anxiety? I feel like when I'm having an attack that I would pay any amount of money to feel/be "normal", but the reality is all of these medical bills can add up. What to do....!?

Reflux caused me to have that lump feeling for a long time & it would come & go. You need to get the reflux under control. I take nexium & prescription strength pepcid & mine is under control & no more lump feeling. I also had the scope, they did find 2 ulcers, which we were pretty sure I had and I also have depression & panic/anxiety. So I actaully think a lot of people with stress/anxiety etc. do also have reflux. You may feel calm, but inside you may not be as calm as you think.

I suggest you see an ENT who will probably tell you it is anxiety, dissolving a valium type med under the tongue when it happens will relax the throat muscles

hey my throat was the same way but not sever so im not sure if it the same as yours..my lump i believe is due to anxiety cuz when i didnt know what it was it was bad then when i narrowed it down to either anxiety or a cold infection it started to go away. i never had breathing problems so maybe your body reacts in a more anxiety way then me?? but either way the ent will tell you if your lump has only effected the inside of the throat linning..so hopefully it hasnt and it is only anxiety

I'd like some advice too. I've had this problem on and off for about a year. I took xanax for it the first time it happened, and it knocked me out. It interfers with work too. It is so scary! I figured that it was just anxiety. But, is it maybe someting more serious? I have alot of mucus in my nose and throat too.

xanax or any other valium type med can sedate you strongly or make you feel drunk until you get used to it, best to start with a very small dose, cut tablet up, at home first to see what happens to you, everyone reacts differently

My wife had this lump feeling in her throat for about a year or so. She had a camera test down her throat and they found nothing. Turned out to be anxiety and went away by itself.

I've had the same feeling of a lump in my throat for the past 2 weeks. I plan to make an appt with the Dr. tomorrow. I also have a lot of mucous and throat clearing. I just assumed the lump was from mucous, but I'm not sure. I'm very concerned as my in-law just had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his throat. Please keep us updated what you find out. I will too.

I get this too although its a bit different of a feeling. To me it feels like someone is pushing their fingers into my throat, and its tender to touch. I had the scope and an ultrasound done on my thyroid, they found nothing. I do have severe heartburn(or DID until I started on Nexium). I have only been on the Nexium for about 10 days so I am hopeful that it will help this irritating throat thing.
