Went to the doc for Ativan, ended up with BuSpar

Well I went to the doc today to get some medicine for some anxiety Im going through and instead of giving me more ativan like the Emergency room doctor did, she gave me BuSpar.

Although I was once a heavy drinker (she does not know that), I in no way planned to abuse the pills. What a load of BS. I find something that works and I cant even get it. Im not about to take anything new especially something that takes weeks to work if it even works then.

I told her straight up I wasnt going to take anything like Paxil or the like. She broke out her pill book and started reading me some of the things about buspar I guess trying to convince me that it is ok. Its not like I was begging for more ativan but I just said "I know ativan is addicting but they really are helping me." She wouldnt budge so I took the buspar script anyway.....

I have no insurance and that clinic is the only place I can go. I guess Im stuck dealing with this anxiety and panic on my own. Oh well. I have five or six ativan left and I guess Ill just have to stretch them out and hope this anxiety passes before they are gone. This really burns me up and makes me have even more anxiety just thinking about it.

Wish me luck on my own.

I Know How You Feel.my Doc Is Doing The Same Thing To Me With The Clonazepam.she Prescribed Me Buspar.i Went To A Pysch She Told Me To Go To And Just Because I Had A Shot Of Tequila He Would Not Renew My Presrcription.i Wish You The Best Of Luck With The Clinic,i Am With A Hmo And The Get Kick Backs For Prescribing Paxil Prozac And All These Other Meds, some Which Have Been Recalled, but They Rather That Than You Become An Addict.because The Have To Take Care Of You,but If You Trip Out And Wanna Shoot You Whole Family Because The Prescribe A Ssri Then They Don't Have To Do Anything.some People On This Board Have Drs Who Checked Them Out And It Was Safe For Them To Take Paxil Or Prozac And They Are Fine.but Where I Am The Just Give It To You And Not Find Out If It Works For Your Body.good Luck.keep In Touch.

same thing happened to me at the county hospital. They don't care. Period.

BusPar doesn't work. I haven't heard of one person who said it helped them. Didn't do a damn thing for me either.

I am about to go the PCP now that I have insurance and try to get Xanax... lets see, 23, male. no chance. how stupid. But if you stub your toe, they'll throw all kinds of SSRI's down your throat.

First off I would go to a different Dr. and start fresh.
I have been on Buspar twice. It did help for almost a year each time.
I am right now where you all are trying to find something (not antidepressant) to help. I go Friday to a Psychologist.
One Dr, I went to flat out told me she does not prescribe Ativan at all!
The next Dr. gives me a script for 14 only one refill??
Buspar does not last. I am telling you, I had two different Dr. tell me this exact quote "studies show it does not work past a year". It was a year for me this January and I am just now starting to fall apart with panic attacks again.
Good Luck and try a new Dr.
I am in the same boat

WOW ! I truly do feel for all three of you, just wish I had something worthwhile to
say about this, something that could help.

Question ? Do any of you have a good repore with your Doc's Secretary ?

This is only from my own experience, but if I can't get the Doc to listen to me,
I try to get whatever, done through the Secretary.........., just an idea.

I haven't taken these meds., but my BP Doctor is of the opinion that .........,
' If it ain't broke..........., don't fix it ' , before he would dare change anything.
Isn't this the way things should be ?
He does consider my feelings and ideas on what medications are working for me, and which are NOT !

I do know how you feel though, right now I am trying to get a med., that I forgot to
get from my GP Doctor, who just retired out of the blue !
And, we are only talking about a med., for high cholestrol ! So, I can surely understand
    your situations.

Actually, I am furious, now I have to find a new Doctor, and I live in a small town,
    which makes everything seem impossible.

I hope you all find the answers you are looking for,
    GG

It is so darn hard to find a good Dr. Even if you have rapure with the nurse or secretary they have to sign it off on the Dr.
I live in a big town and still can't find a Dr. that acts like they care or even listen for that matter.
I just let my Gyno know I was done with her last week.
Went asking for hormone testing due to my age 41 and lots of peri menopausal symptoms and she insists on a Ultra Sound to check for Fibroids?!? Cost me 250 bucks and not a one fibroid!!! I could have told her that!!! I chased her down the hall to get meds and she kept me waiting for 4 hours and rushed me out the door! Dr.'s these days are terrible. Thank God for the Internet because it seems to be the only place to get a ear, support and help. They wonder why people order drugs from Canada

If there is room in the 'boat' I guess I could jump in too. I too had my doctor give me Buspar instead of my Lorazapam. What is with that? I've only taken half a pill of Buspar so far and am still just taking my Lorazapam. I just hate the idea of going off of something that works for me to try something else.

We need a Yacht I'm sure!!! Climb aboard.
My theory is perhaps the drug companies are giving kick backs for prescribing certain drugs?
What is Odd is when I asked for Buspar they tried to push Effexor off on me?
Like I said in another thread one Dr. I went to flat out said their office would NOT prescribe Lorazapam and the last one only gave me 24 pills for the entire year?

Re: Went to the doc for Ativan, ended up with BuSpar

ativan is a valium type med, at one time buspar was advertised to docs as the non addictive althernative to valium type meds, perhaps this is happening again

buspar is a tranquilliser of a different type that must be taken daily and is of no help for panic attacks, its expensive and seldom helps much or at all and generally has a poor reputation, its high price may give a short placebo effect

when attempting to get a benzo, it may help to remind doc that anxiety sufferers are usually too sensible to become addicted to these meds, also that you will have a difficult time functioning without them
maybe mention that you want to start a CBT relaxation course or program but will be too anxious or panicky without benzos
dont ask for xanax as this is popular with hard drug addicts who have run out of their drugs, ask doc to chose which benzo for you, this makes him feel important
older docs seem generally less anti benzo

hint, benzo sleeping pills work well during the day in small doses without making you sleepy

finally I know of 2 psychiatrists who specialise in severe anxiety and panic attacks, both prefer valium to all other meds
