Re: can anxiety affect the heart
The symptoms of a panic attack that you described won't harm the heart in and of themselves, but, yes, unfortunately, long-term anxiety and "type-A" personality have long been associated with heart disease due to the stress. Don't worry about it, though; there's no sense in worrying about something that you can't control. I'm very heart-conscious, and I figure, if you eat right and exercise, that should be more than enough to counteract your out-of-whack sympathetic nervous system...

Hi there, yes anxiety can make you feel like your heart is pounding or beating irregular. It is all to do with breathing properly, try and get hold of a good relaxation tape, it really is quite difficult to breath properly when you suffer from anxiety. Give the tape a try and lets know how you get on. Take care x

Re: can anxiety affect the heart
short term anxiety and heart racing wont hurt your heart but long term anxiety will. Stress produces cortisol and over a period of time cortisol will wear away at your heart tissues and valves. This has been proven. The way to lessen the effect cortisol has on your heart and other tissues in the body this is by excercising regularly. This is the MAIN reason why people with anxiety disorders must excercise because they do have long term stress.

Re: can anxiety affect the heart
I've heard of people who get hives from excercising but I doubt it's a allergic reaction to food or whatever but I don't know for sure. If you want to be sure go see a allergy specialist doctor. They'll do a whole range of tests on you to see if you're allergic to anything as well as give you a good idea of what to do if you get hives when doing excercise but excercising is one of the best ways to combat anxiety and stress. Maybe do lower impact excercising for a longer duration instead of short intense type. Just consult the docs first.

Re: can anxiety affect the heart
I've had anxiety since I was probably 14. I'm 41 now and have high blood pressure that is all anxiety-related. I have to be on blood pressure meds now permanently because of my anxious moments. I would suggest trying to conquer the anxiety early in life than waiting til it can cause high blood pressure. I hate anxiety, but I hate the high blood pressure even worse, it's very scary itself. Makes me more fearful of my health. Stress does affect the heart, no if's, and's or but's about it. Be proactive in taking care of yourself today. I'm still trying to find answers to deal with my anxiety. I try prayer a lot. Good luck!!! Get your BP checked regularly and exercise and eat right that will help too.

Eek! Now I'm more anxious. How long-term is harmful?

I get crazy heart palpitations, sometimes my heart will just keep pounding really really fast for hours, barely remitting. I don't want to get heart disease!

I get a lot of exercise though.

Re: can anxiety affect the heart
Lots of excercise (aerobic is better than anerobic for anxiety) is very important but also a good diet is essential. Keep your cholesterol low and reduce your sugar intake as well as take lots of Omega 3 fish oil supplements. Fish oil not only helps with cholesterol and hardenning of the arteries but also promotes mental functioning and lifts mood. Finally I'd also consider taking up yoga, tai chi, massage, or meditation to help you wind down and relax and calm your nerves. All these can help reduce stress, cortisol, and blood pressure. Anxiety wont hurt you as long as you take extra care of yourself.
