I'm trying to work up the nerve to take it. I don't want to take Xanax daily forever!

Re: Who's taking Lexapro? Can you please tell me if it's helping you?

    Hi there -

I have been taking Lexapro since end of September and it has totally helped me with my daily Xanax habit. Same as you, I got it because I was worried about having to take Xanax all the time, and it does help. I still have to take Xanax sometimes, but not every day and not two or three on bad days like I used to. Right now i take about 4 a week, but for the first month of Lexapro I went 6 days without even one.

What dosage of Xanax do you take though? I take .5 mgs and I have been told by three differnt doctors that in small doses it really isn't anything to be too concerned about, even if you have to take it daily, so that makes me feel better too.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. Right now I'm taking .25 Xanax three times a day. When I first started it I was taking one or two a week. Then one every day or so, and now, because my anxiety is at an all time high, three .25 a day. Even at this dosage I'm getting break-through anxiety, but I refuse to up my dosage more. My anxiety is purely health-related so I'm always worried that there's something wrong with me that the Dr's just can't find. I've had many tests and they all come back as normal as can be, but I just get these symptoms that don't feel right at all. Every symptom I get does seem to be on the list of anxiety symptoms, but I can't convince myself that it's JUST anxiety and nothing else. I'd really like to try the Lexapro but it seems that I've heard so many stories about negative reactions and such that it scares me. Did you have a hard time when you first started it? How long did it take until you felt better? Any info you can give me is greatly appreciated!

Re: Who's taking Lexapro? Can you please tell me if it's helping you?

    Hi,

I'm also taking Lexapro right now and I can tell you that its been great for me! It was a rough start but now after being on 20mg's for one week, I feel great!! Like you, I was taking Xanax .25mg's 2-3 times per day and I still had breakthrough anxiety. All or most of my anxiety is also health related. I've also had all the tests and everything is normal.

When I first started Lexapro it wasn't easy. I put off taking an SSRI for months but now I wish I would have tried it sooner. It did make my anxiety worse for the first week to two weeks but I had extra Xanax to get me through that time. Distraction is the number one key. Keep yourself busy and your mind off your anxiety as much as possible.

Lexapro doesnt make me too tired. I'm still able to do my daily things and take care of my almost two year old. I could never go places before without being completely uncomfortable.

I started taking 5mg's of Lexapro and like I said, I had increased anxiety for the first week or two and some heartburn. Then I went to 10mg's and felt a little better but still not enough. Went to 15mg's for two weeks and then to 20mg's. Ive been on 20mg's for just over a week now and I feel great!

I did things over the weekend that I wouldn't have been able to do two months ago. I still get anxiety but I have my Xanax to take for that. I still take it once a day but am going back to my psychiatrist tomorrow to figure out how to wean off of it. I don't feel like I need it everyday anymore. I still need to work on driving alone (thats my biggest fear because I had a major panic attack on the highway last January and I've been terrified ever since). But the fear isn't as overwhelming anymore.

Also, my health anxiety has reduced. I get pains everyday but I don't obsess over them and no longer think I'm dying everyday.
I now realize what Iv'e been missing out on. I'm beginning to get my life back and it feels great.

I would suggest you try the Lexapro. It doesn't work for everyone, but chances are you'll find something that does work for you. You have to be patient and willing to ride out the initial side effects but they do go away. It gets worse before it gets better for some people, including me. I would do it all over again if I had to though. The benefits have been that great for me.

Even though I'm not feeling 100% better, I'm about 80% better and thats a huge improvement for me. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I found this board to be greatly comforting when I started taking Lexapro. Sometimes just talking to others helped.
Good luck and I hope you're able to give the Lexapro a try! I hope I was able to help you a little!

Re: Who's taking Lexapro? Can you please tell me if it's helping you?

As Sarah said, some people do have a hard time adjusting to the Lexapro initially. It really differs from person to person so no one can tell you how it will be for you. Myself, I didn't notice a darn thing except that I felt better after about three days. I didn't have ant side effects except a few nights of night sweats. You'll just never know how it affects you until you try it.

As far as the Xanax, You aren't even taking 1 mg a day so don't fret too much about that. They do have a new drug out there called Niravam that is basically a generic version of Xanax XR, so it lasts longer and you don't have to take as much troughout the day.

Thank you so much for your reply. Just hearing how much it's helped you makes me feel like I really should give it a try. I'm so glad you're feeling so much better than you were! It's great to hear about someone winning the war on anxiety!

Re: Who's taking Lexapro? Can you please tell me if it's helping you?

Hi there!! I take 20mg of Lexapro. I was on it last year and gained weight really fast, so I ended up going off in June of this year. Well, I had a health anxiety "crisis" and went back on in October. Gosh, this stuff is really a lifesaver for me. I am so much happier. It makes a world of a difference. I am going to try VERY hard to keep my weight under control and hopefully that will work out. I am not freaking out about symptoms as much as I used to, and I am thinking more rationally. I am HAPPY now. I could NOT say that before!! I get excited about things again and feel like a normal person does. I love this stuff!

By the way, starting it wasn't so bad for me. I didn't have much of an appetite the first week, and my stomach was a bit upset, but other than that I was okay. Be patient if you feel yucky the first week. Try and stick it out for at least a month. The side effects DO go away!

I also wanted to say that I'm sorry that you are a health anxiety sufferer like me. Just try and remember that you're not alone! Many of us have been there. I can't even explain how much different I feel on Lexapro. For example, I've been feeling really tired lately. If I was my "old" self, I would be freaking out - AHH! I have lymphoma! Blah blah. You get it. But my "new" self says, "you're tired because you sit in front of a computer all day at work! No freaking out allowed!" THis is why I say I think more rationally. I really think that I'm kind of normal now!!

That is the onyl difference I could tell. Both of them don't do a damn thing depression wise. I have no clue why they are called Anti-depressants. Doctors are just drug-dealers nowadays. Benzodiazepines or Barbitutuates are your best best or Anxiety/Panic, even depression. I can see why so many people relate to illegal drugs. Because the Antidepressants screw you up worse than you were before. Now I'm afraid I'm stuck on this Lexapro crap. What can you do? I guess I could try Remeron next. No way I am touching Wellbutrin.
I disagree. Everyone reacts to meds differently so it's not fair to state your opinion as fact. Lexapro has definitely helped my depression, which i wasn't even aware I had until it was gone! And I know a lot of people have not been helped by certain SSRIs and have had excellent results with others, me for one.

I have also never had any problems going off of them. I do agree that benzos work the best...I would give up my Lexapro in a heartbeat if I had to choose between Xanax and lex.

Re: Who's taking Lexapro? Can you please tell me if it's helping you?

Sarah5432: I was so glad to read your post. I finally went to my doctor yesterday because of my driving panic attacks..and he put me on Celexa. I understand that it is a sister drug to Lexapro. I have severe panic attacks in the car and can't live with it anymore. Very dibilitating. Do you know of anyone who has taken Celexa for this? A friend of mine does, and her accounts are the only one I have, which are positive. I'm glad to hear others also suffer from car anxiety, especially after the response I got yesterday at the doctor. He was indeed sensitive to my issues, however he giggled at first. Made me feel like he thought I was nuts! I, at this point don't care what others think since they don't have this, its hard for them to understand. I hope we can all beat this, so we can get on with our lives... take care and thanks for your post.

Re: Who's taking Lexapro? Can you please tell me if it's helping you?

    Hi,

I'm glad that you're going to try the Celexa. I don't personally know of anyone that has taken Celexa but I've read many, many posts about it and I don't have any bad thoughts on it. Sorry I can't be of more help there. My family physician prescribed Celexa for me, but I didn't take it. I wanted to see a psychiatrist who specialized in this stuff first and he prescribed me Lexapro. He actually told me that I could choose between Celexa and Lexapro, he would prescribe either one, but for some reaosn I felt more comfortable with Lexapro.

Remember, my anxiety was really high at this time and I had spent weeks researching each and every SSRI and had narrowed it down to these two but Lexapro seemed to have less side effects so thats why I chose it. You may not have any side effects with Celexa, you won't know until you try it.

I have major car anxiety. I'm perfeclty fine as long as someone else is driving but I still struggle with driving myself. If someone else is in the car with me I'm ok but going it alone is still hard for me. I'm working on it though. I just need to get over the fear of something happening. I almost crashed my car with my daughter in the backseat as I was taking her to her one year doctors appt. Ever since then I've been terrified of taking her someplace alone.

Therapy has been very helpful to me though.

Keep us posted on how you're doing with the Celexa. I'm sure you'll be just fine and in a few weeks you'll be feeling better!!

OMG Sarah, I am the SAME way as you in the car. {REMOVED} I am at my wits end and am having a hard time even going to work, which I've never had before. I could drive to Texas only if someone was with me, if not.. forget about even down the road!
