The generic med must be the bioequivalent, or contain as much of the active ingredient as the name brand, as I understand it. In the U.S. the FDA oversees these drugs to make sure they are as effective. Pharmacists have said to me they are the same drugs. On the other hand, I've had a doctor tell me that name brands are better. Take that however you like...I think the most important thing is that we are able to receive good medicine, in a cost effective manner. Good luck in your decision.

Phizer has lost it's patent on Zoloft i guess. I'm also taking it. I didn't get it in generic form though yet. After such and such amount of time, the drug company that put a brand name medication on the market eventually loses it's patent and other companies can now make pills with the same active ingrediant in it, which in this case is Sertraline HCI. Prozac and Paxil (similar medications) have also lost their patent. Maybe some people will come on the boards who have taken these meds and tell you the difference in efficacy and side effects between taking the brand name and the generic kind. There should not be much of a difference. They say in the United States it's tough for a medication to become generic. The FDA must ensure that the drug is safe and effective and put through a hard multi-step process.

My mom is so angry she had to pay $90 for a month supply which is very expensive. She really wants to find a Genetric Brand of Zoloft but all Pharmacys swear they dont have any. So Genetric Brand is just as normal as regular but cheaper right? Cause I have social anxiety and gad. Well I really need a site or something to find some genetric badly. thx

Maybe Zoloft isn't available in generic form yet.

My daughter had an experience with switching from Celexa name brand to generic............within 4 days she was having panic and withdrawal symptoms..... switched back to Name Brand and she was fine......My Dr told me there is a big difference for some people and the FDA requires an "equivalant" amount of the active med, but it can vary by upto 30% "she says" and they can use different fillers. I took Regular paxil and was fine, tried generic and I was puffy and retaining fluid.......switched back and it was gone........so we all react differently to these med....just watch how you feel

When you pick up your prescription, if it says "Zoloft" on the bottle, it's the name brand, but if it says "sertraline", it's generic. I have generic Prozac (fluoxetine) and Klonopin (clonazepam), and they work just as well as the regular ones, and my psychiatrist wrote me a prescription for the name brand...
