who has switched from xanax to another benzo?

right now i am taking xanax .5mg 3-4 times a day.. and honestly i am getting sick of the ups and downs with it and needing to take it so much.. been thinking about asking my Dr. to try something else that lasts a little longer..
i have tried the xanax XR but i cant afford it and my insurance wont cover it so it is out of the question until they make a generic of it..

anyway the question is: if you have switched did it cause any withdrawal symptoms? basically is a benzo a benzo no matter the brand?

also i know there has been alot of discussion before about which one lasts longer.. but i am gonna ask it again... which one(s) last longer then xanax? i was thinking about asking to try klonopin or valium.. i dont want to keep popping these pills every 4 hrs anymore..

i know most people dont use the benzos on a daily basis but it is the only thing that works for me, i have tried many many ADs with no luck and very bad side effects so please dont tell me how i am going to become dependent on a benzo as i all ready am and know the risks..

Do You Get Rebound Anxiety From Xanax If You Try Not To Take It? This Freaks Me Out And Maybe Makes Me Feel Worse. It Does Work For Me And Now I Need It. I Haven't Tried Klonopin So I Don't Know About That.

I take Klonopin .5 once a day before bed and I notice around 9 pm I start to get a little jittery until I take it. I feeel calmer all day long But I am trying hard to not increse that doseage. I think .5 a day every day will do no harm and be easy to get off of

clonazepam ( klonapin) is a popular long lasting benzo for anxiety and isnt expensive
xanax xr isnt worth the money, IMO
you could take both together for a while in half doses to ease swapping

Xanax has a very short half life of about 6 to 12hrs, which means it is out of your system pretty quickly and could be why you are getting ups and downs with it.

Klonopin has a much longer half life of 18 to 50hrs, so you probably wouldn't notice the effects wearing off so much.

Re: who has switched from xanax to another benzo?

    Hey punkdizzle.

I didn't have any luck when I switched from Xanax to Klonopin; this was just me, though. You could have a completely different response.

Truthfully, I still think the gold standard for anxiety and muscle relaxation is Valium. It has such a long half life... Sometimes, doctors even give this to taper benzos like Xanax, because it helps to ease the withdrawals.

Valium is harder to get a doctor to prescribe anymore, because it does absorb into the fatty layer; it can cause a slight "euphoric" feeling (more so than the others).

I think it's worth checking into. If your Dr. would prescribe you Valium, that would be my recommendation. If he doesn't, Klonopin might be the 2nd choice, for me anyways.

I found the equivalency chart to be a little off when I tried to switch from one to the other.

It's supposed to be .5mg of Xanax=.25mg of Klonopin; however, that wasn't even close to what I would needed. Instead I needed 1mg of Klonopin for every .5mg of Xanax I previously had taken.

Does that make sense? Instead of Klonopin being twice as strong, it was twice as weak.

your replys always make sense.. my Dr did offer to switch me to either one at my last visit with him.. but at the time the xanax was working fine for me (still is in how it keeps my anxiety way down) and i didnt want try and fix was isnt broken so to speak.. and neither did he... but he did give me the option to try something else if i wanted to...

its just more of a convenience issue for me with the xanax.. remembering to take some with me when i go out incase i am not home to get to my pill bottle.. and just remembering in gereral to take them.. which is what is causing me the ups and downs..

on the days i remember to take them on time i dont get the highs and lows.. i just stay leveled out at the dose i am on..

i cant say i would mind a euphoric feeling now and then, as i dont get anything like that with the xanax and IMO that is good because i wont get "addicted" to the xanax.. ill just stay "dependent" on it to live my life like a normal person..

BTW: thanks for the replys everyone..

Re: who has switched from xanax to another benzo?

Glad I made some sense... I had been up all night, so wasn't too sure if I had even formed anything resembling the English language. I see I made some mistakes, oh well!

The valium "may" give you that euphoric feeling the first couple of doses. I have taken it before, and it definitely did not give it to me. I had been on Xanax for awhile, so that may be why.

I definitely think it's the gold standard; however, doctors are reluctant to prescribe it because it's more abused than Xanax or Klonopin.

Obviously, I don't agree with that frame of mind, at all!

Whatever works is my motto. 500 people could have the worst side-effects in the world with one medicine. I might come along and experience life-changing improvement with it. Does that mean a Dr. shouldn't prescribe it for me? Nope! For example, I was prescribed a Duragesic (Fentanyl Transdermal System) pain patch for a chronic pain condition. It made me physically ill, and I had to stop taking it. For others, it's their "gold standard". "Whatever works!"

.5mg of Xanax is supposed to be the equivalent of 5mg of Valium. You want to make sure to stay around that. They do come in 2mg tablets. I would make sure you discuss switching and mention the equivalency charts that are out there. I would hate to see you get a dose that's too low and doesn't really "match up" with the Xanax, and feel that the Valium wasn't working.

The fact that you have a Dr. willing to prescribe Valium is excellent. He didn't get scared away by a few bad apples.

Let me know what you end up doing.

Re: who has switched from xanax to another benzo?

i have taken xanax, ativan, and klonopin over the years and have recently completed a taper off 3-4mgs ativan using valium. my experience with these drugs has been that if you would like to continue taking them than the short acting ones like xanax and ativan are the worst as the interdose withdrawal symptoms can be very uncomfortable and they tend to quit working pretty fast and you will need to updose. klonopin and valium are much longer lasting and having taken both, i found that i had the least interdose withdrawals on klonopin but it was worse to get off of then valium. i know you don't want to get off benzos so i would suggest you take klonopin as it is much stronger than valium and on the same level as xanax. if you ever do choose to get off, then i would highly suggest valium.

I switched from Xanax to Klonopin a few years ago. I too need to take it every day. I take one .5 mg pill every morning and it's great! I just switched from one to the other and no ill effects. It also comes in a genreic form. Good luck!

Re: who has switched from xanax to another benzo?

pleasantville: thanks for your input.. its not so much that i dont want to come off of the benzos... its that i am not ready mentally to do so at this point in time and i am not even sure if i can because not only am i taking them for anxiety but to control symptoms from another med problem which is causing me muscle spaz and the xanax controls that problem even better then it does the anxiety.... so i am hoping i can get something that deals with both in a dose that isnt going to zonk me out but not have me watching the clock for the next dose.. i am going to see my Dr. on Wed and see which of the 2 he thinks would be best for my situation.. and use the info i have learned here so i dont sound like i am clueless..

would you mind telling me a little about your exp. with coming off of them? how you felt, if it was a real nightmare, ect. if not no prob..

Re: who has switched from xanax to another benzo?

Over my 24 some odd years I have been prescribed alprazolam, lorazepam and clonazapem (among other non-benzos, combined and not). It's only been the past ten or so years that I was switched to clonazepam (Klonopin). It has a longer half-life, meaning it stays in your body longer and proper dosage as directed maintains a steady level in your system. You usually only have to take it only once or twice a day. Plus, it has less severe side effects than the other benzos. While I've been prescribed up to 6-8 mg alprazolam a day, I am now on 2mg clonazepam twice a day, once in the morning once in the evening. This level was achieved by my doctor over a two year period with a maximum dose of 8mg/day prescribed for a little while. Clonazepam has been most effective for me, alprazolam works on an as-needed basis, and lorazepam has a fair effect but not the best for me.

Re: who has switched from xanax to another benzo?

While I never had any severe problems getting off of xanax, doctors frequently prescribe clonazepam to taper patients off of benzos. I've actually had much worse problems getting off of SSRI's. In any of my cases though over the years, getting off of medication has still left me with symptoms returning.
