| Question about Xanax (Alprazolam) dosage
I am in for a REALLY rough weekend...I have two finals that I have to take...one has to be finished by Saturday night and the other needs to be completed by Sunday night...I believe the combination of these two classes this quarter plus working full time is what cause my anxiety to spin out of control....anyway, my prescription is for .25mg of the Alprazolam...if I am feeling overly anxious is it OK to double up to a total of .50mg? I know my previous primary care doctor said I could take two at night if it was really bothering me? Will I get really tired? Right now I only take one about an hour before going to sleep so I don't really know if they make me tired or not?
What dosage do you all take when you are feeling really anxious?

My pills are .5 mg., every four hours as needed. I usually break them in half and take .25 if I feel really anxious, but for panic attacks, I take a whole pill. They make me a little sleepy sometimes if I'm just sitting or laying down, usually they just make me feel calm...which is great!

Hi,
If your Dr. has said you can double the dose, it should be ok. I take 1 mg xanax four times a day. I've taken it for years. It doesn't make me sleepy, but I didn't start on that level.
I hope things go ok and you get everything done by Sunday night....Take Care....Connie

Thanks Connie...Right now .25mg seems to calm my symptoms a little bit...enough not to constantly think about them but they are still there. What I will do I guess if need be take 1 .25 and if I am still feeling overly anxious, I can take another but I am hoping to get by on just one.
I was just curious as to the dosages of other people because from what I have read so far, .25 seems to be very mild in comparison.
Who knows, the anxiety and exam Gods may be watching over me and I won't have to take anything.
The more I think about what I have to do this weekend the more I know I made the right decision in taking off next quarter and just giving my body and mind a break.

I was prescribed .5mg 5 years ago, for my mild cp - I tend to become tense when in public situations, and it would relax my nerves and make my cp "go away." I have very mild cp.
Did you go to a psychologist for the prescription? 2.5 mg is quite a lot. I would probably sleep for days! I couldn't handle .5 mg, and I would take it only when I had to go to a wedding, presentation for school, etc.
I don't have health insurance at the moment, however i am thinking about how I might just want to go to a doctor for a prescription to keep some aside for moments I've mentioned above. Any suggestion as to what kind of doctor I could go see for this? It's hard finding good doctors nowadays, esp. ones who could really look after your best interests instead of looking after their own only.

My dosage is .25mg not 2.5
I am seeing my primary care doctor for my anxiety but not all PCD's are Xanax friendly which is one of the reasons I decided to go with the family doctor. My appointment is not until April 3rd so I really do not know what course of action he plans to take.

Actually, the only person who prescribed Alprazolam was a neurologist. I had not gone back to him because he felt that I had no "problem" so I shouldn't be taking anything. He said he was a neurologist, and felt that my problem was more psychological than physical.
However, according to some research I've done, those who suffer nerological disorders (either small or extensive), are really lacking a chemical imbalance that connects brain with nerve activity. And medication such as this, helps "make the connect" between nerves & brain.
Well I hope I can overcome this on my own. I guess, society sometimes, is the reason we are all on some type of med! We need to understand that we all need to help each other & not judge each other! I do not know which is more difficult: ignoring judgement, or NOT passing judgement |

If you feel a primary care doctor would not help, then why not see a psychiatrist...they deal with these types of anxieties and do prescribe meds for things like this.
I did see a psychologist but they do not prescribe meds and she basically told me it was all in my head and I am causing this myself...needless to say I am not going back to her again!
If you feel this is effecting your everyday life...then I would definitely go and see someone!

I was perscribed 1 mg pills and I take them during the day if my anxiety is not subsiding after an hour or so. I have even taken 2 mg at times, but that high dose did make me tired. The max dosage at once is 3 mg, so you are quite safe taking .50 if you feel your body responds to it okay. Everyone is different.
As things get stressful this weekend, besides your meds, remember to take time to breathe every now and then.

Thanks Dance4jc...I have to keep remembering that I just have to get through Saturday and Sunday and I will be fine...after my last final on Sunday I am a free woman for the next 12 weeks and I will be able to concentrate on myself and my health. |
