Red face Coffee made my anxiety go crazy!!

This evening, I took my usual Xanax and an Atenolol (for high BP) and within an hour, I was enjoying a nice home-cooked meal. After dinner, I felt so calm and relaxed that I said "oh what the heck, I think I'll make myself a cup of coffee". Well, within an hour of drinking that one cup of coffee, my anxiety was through the roof!!. I mean, anxiety, panic, all kinds of crazy tingles and feeling like I just was'nt "there" (hard to explain). Anyway, can one lousy cup of coffee wreak this much havock??.

Yup! Sucks doesn't it? My doctor says no caffeine for me because it seems to trigger my panicky feelings. No coffee..not even pop with caffeine! Which really sucks because I love any kind of coffee drink and colas. Now I have to find coffee without any caffeine, which isn't too difficult, just less variety.

OH God, Pls don' t tell me I have to give up my Coffee !!!!
I know it causes, exacerbates my anxiety, I can tell, when I drink it. I have to throw the 2nd cup out. This is the one thing I truly enjoy, is my coffee.

I love coffee too. I've been able to cut down to one cup, but I always want more. I wish I could convince my hubby to switch to decaf. He makes a pot of coffee in the morning and it is just waiting for me when I get up...begging me to drink it

Re: Coffee made my anxiety go crazy!!

I'm so glad that someone started this topic. I started an anxiety journal last year, and the biggest dietary change I noticed was that I had started drinking coffee, which I have never done (I inherited my grandmother's old percolator). I love caffeine, and have been drinking diet sodas for 20+ years, but the coffee definitely is different. I Love It! until about a half hour after I am finished, and I start feeling nervous and anxious, which is totally not my character, believe me. Yesterday, I started comparing caffeine content in coffee vs. sodas, etc... Nothing else even comes close. The figures used for this information were for a 7 ounce cup, about 140mg. I use the really big cups that are common today. A serving according to the coffee can is for a 5-6 oz cup. A 12 ounce soda ranges from 35(most) to 55(few)mgs. The energy drinks have more, of course. If I drink four 12 ounce diet sodas by lunch time I'm just hitting the mark for one small cup of coffee! Yikes ! Also, percolating coffee has more caffeine than drip coffee makers, etc... Look it up, it's pretty informative. You may be able to keep your soda, or keep a cup of joe in the morning and don't drink any more. See what works for you. I tried mixing decaf and regular, half and half. That is also helpful if you like the flavored coffees.
