    beta blockers for stage fright

My dr. gave me a beta blocker for stage fright. I have to do presentations at work and end up blushing and suffering flop sweats. The dosage he prescribed is 12 mg and it doesn't seem to help much. Should I up the dosage or try to get a benzo prescription to help?

Maybe talk to your doctor about upping the dose. Benzos have addictive properties which is why you don't wanna be taking them long term, but something like Diazepam may be good for one off times.

thanks...that's what I need. It's situational...only 1 presentation per wk. I'll check with my GP.

I'm taking 30mg on the beta blocker and thinking doubling it to 60mg for these once per week situations. My doc wouldn't prescibe any of the benzo's...he wanted to start me on Zoloft, which I refused since I'm not depressed and just have situational anxiety due to these presentations

I take a beta blocker prescription called ďPropranololĒ itís said to be the most effective blood pressure medication that has calming as a side effect. Many people swear that this is a wonder drug for things like speaking in public.

I take it along with Xanax for Panic disorder with GAD. Honestly doesn't seem to do much for my anxiety but I still take it at times. I monitor my blood pressure a couple times a day and when it goes higher then recommended I take it for a few days and it drops down to a healthy rate. So it works for its intended purpose too.

I donít tolerate medication well so take the smallest dose of 10mg most people take 20 to 30mg. I noticed Propranolol is on Wal-Martís list of $4.00 prescriptions. Inexpensive and helpful to many.

Xanax will eliminate any anxiety I am convinced, but if it is just a stage fright issue then I would think facing the fear head on would be a better way to attack it. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy would help you a lot and also putting yourself into as many uncomfortable situations as possible will help. Remember a little anxiety isn't goint to kill you. It may be bothersome, but is not threatening at all. Check into the CBT before you start taking any drugs with potential side effects. If you have serious life-long anxiety dissorder then drugs may be the only way out, but for stage fright, drugs are not the answer.

    Good luck,
    OE

I take Propranolol - it's a life saver when it comes to my anxiety attacks. Which Beta-Blocker are you prescribed?
