Switching from Zoloft to Celexa (& klonopin when needed)

    Hi.
I posted earlier about going on Zoloft, but it made me jittery & I had no appetite. My oncologist nurse told me to stop it, which I did yesterday.
I'm going through some anxiety issues right now, and it certainly is difficult to find the right drug.
Today, my GP wrote a script for Celexa 10mg. She said it's the "sister" to "Lexapro." She also gave me generic klonopin (clonazepam) to take as needed.
Anyone have any good (or bad) reports on this drug?
I'm so hoping this is a good one for me. She said Celexa addresses anxiety, more than depression---which is what I need at the moment. I think my anxiety is outweighing my depression.
    Thanks for any input.
    It's so appreciated.
    S.

Re: Switching from Zoloft to Celexa (& klonopin when needed)

I was on that combination of meds for a while. once the celexa kicked in )4 to 6 weeks) i was able to come off Klonopin. It is a nice medication.

I took mine at dinner time because it made me sleepy a few hours after I took it.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thank you.
I'm sure I'll have some questions.
I'm so leery of taking anything, since it's the holiday, that I'm considering cutting it in half. It's probably not a good move, but I don't want to be immobile this week/weekend.
This is so unnerving. I've got so much I want to do & I don't want to feel like a zombie, like I did on the Zoloft.
I wish there was a "magic bullet." There are no guarantee's, are there?
    Thanks.
    I'm taking this slow.....

Re: Switching from Zoloft to Celexa (& klonopin when needed)

What I did when I first started taking Celexa was cut it in half and I have to tell you it was not good. I mean I felt OK for a few days and then my anxiety was pretty bad and my doctor told me that It was almost like I was irritating my system.

I then took the 10mg and a klonopin (1/2 of a .5 mg pill) and I was good to go.

Take it slow and I know it is hard to find the right med. But Celexa is a good one.

    Thank you.
How long did it take until you started to feel better?
    By the way, Happy Thanksgiving.

the anxiety felt better a couple of weeks. And then after 5 weeks it was pretty much gone. And that is when i stopped taking the klonopin.

I feel that it was a much calmer drug than Zoloft for me.

My sister in law is on this and she loves it.

I am here if you need support!

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Re: Switching from Zoloft to Celexa (& klonopin when needed)

Hi, I am on celexa for anxiety and I find it a very good drug. I have been on it for 5 months and it's really controlling my hypochondria and not making me sleepy; in fact, it's made me more energetic. i really feel like my body/mind needed this to stabilize. I had been recovering from an 8 month viral illness and had a hard time dealing with a strange illness for a long time....

For the first 5 weeks, before it started working for me, I needed to take ativan at night. But now it's just the 20 mg of celexa and I really feel great.

Everybody is different with these drugs. Effexor was terrible for me (I turned into a zombie and my doc was SO confident it would help me) and Paxil made me sleepy. Celexa seems to be right for me. It may take some time to find the right meds, but it can really be a lifesaver. I can't imagine what life would be like without it, for now, anyway. It's worth experimenting a bit, but it does take time to take effect..

    best,

    c

I switched from zoloft to celexa 6 years ago because i was having sexual side effects(not good for my husband). It worked great for me. I had not problems with it. I took Xanax when needed, but I hardly ever needed it.

Re: Switching from Zoloft to Celexa (& klonopin when needed)

    Thank you C & Jailyn,
I've known for a long time I have/had anxiety issues, but never really sought help, until my unfortunate diagnosis month's ago.
I, too, have been battling disease for about 7 or 8 months & been through treatment (chemo & radiation).
I feel I'm on the upswing physically, but mentally, the mental issues are surmounting. My prognosis is 'good.' (fingers crossed)
I'm a singer (for many years) and started having anxiety and mild panic attacks before performances....not always....but, it was very unnerving when it happened.
Anyway, if this celexa "does the trick" I will be forever grateful.
I so badly want to regain my health, physically & mentally.
I get excited, just thinking about being somewhat "normal"---but, really what is "normal?"
    Everyone's different, right?
Thank you so much for your input.
It sounds like Celexa is working well for both of you.
I hope it works better than the Zoloft. I couldn't afford to lose my appetite like I was. I'm still fighting a battle, and I need my strength.
    Good luck to you both.
    God bless,
    S.

Re: Switching from Zoloft to Celexa (& klonopin when needed)

    I wanted to add:
My doctor suggested to take a 10 mg. Celexa, along with a full .5 mg klonopin in the morning, plus a full .5 mg klonopin the evening.
Do you think this is too much klonopin?
I suppose I'll just have to try & see.
I took it right after my Thanksgiving dinner....so, I'm playing the waiting game.
I hope I can hang in there with this one.
I so badly need to get this anxiety/mild depression under control.
Once again, Happy Thanksgiving to all.
We visited some of my lovely elderly neighbors in the nursing home & took my neighbor (who lives alone) a cherry pie. I feel like I "helped" a little....
We also took a 7 lb. ham to my mom, who told me earlier today, she thinks she "burnt it up" a little....she didn't know it was already cooked!
Count your blessings... I am. It's lovely to be able to be here & share, especially after a cancer diagnosis.
    love, S.

Re: Switching from Zoloft to Celexa (& klonopin when needed)

    Hi Singer,

No, I don't think that too much klonopin. You are on a low dose of celexa. I take 20 mg which I think is the norm. Will the doc be increasing your dose at some pt? I think it's good to start slowly, for your body to adjust, but bear in mind that it took about 5 weeks on 20 mg of celexa for me not to need the ativan.....

With these drugs it takes time, that's why the ativan or klonopin helps along the way....but, if they work....you will feel like you again and that is worth the wait (at least it was for me.....).

    best, c
