    Success with Buspar

I have read some posts that are encouraging about this drug.
Many years ago a GP gave me a script for it, but I was too afraid to try it.
I think she offered a real low dose to be taken twice daily.
Will the posters who use it,mind sharing what dose they started on,
or what dose has proven successful for them?
My appt is Tues and I might request to try it again.
I have gone to the website that makes Buspar and it always says under
    construction? strange huh!
    Thanks! RR

    Re: Success with Buspar

I started with 5mg pills and the starting schedule was 5mg twice a day for a week, then it stepped up to 5mg three times a day for the next and for the third week 5mg four times a day. After 2 months I started taking 10mg 3 times a day. It's been a year and a half with no problems, the anxiety has lessened to almost zero compared to what it was before.

    Re: Success with Buspar

I started at 10mg in the morning and 10mg at night of Buspar and have stayed there. It's a low dosage but it's good for me. I love it and find it very helpful for anxiety...plus, no bad side effects!

THANK YOU ~Northwest and jenner~for answering so promptly.
I am glad to know this med really can work. I am finding more often that not,
that most docs are very reluctant to give me Ativan, although it has been a lifesaver
for my anxiety. But if Buspar works just as well~I am more than willing to try it!
Do you think the name brand is more effective than generic?
    thanks again~RR

    Re: Success with Buspar

I am having good results with the generic buspar. I've tried other meds but couldn't make it through the side effects (dose to high?). After months and months of suffering I decided I would try the buspar in very low doses. Started 5mg twice a day Sept. 12th, 08. Doc also suggested I supplement with low dose of klonopin till the buspar kicks in. This has been perfect for me. I don't feel that I need the klonopin daytime anymore. Hope this keeps up.

I've tried both name and generic, for me they are the same. It seems the 5mg doses have a faster (or maybe longer) response time. Found this out after researching on the net.

    Re: Success with Buspar

I started out on 5mg twice a day and now up to 7.5mg twice a day (they even sell a 15mg dividable tablet for just this dose). I love this drug. Zero to no side effects. You can miss a dose (forget!) and you have no withdrawal whatsoever.

My doc says she has patients on 60mg a day of Buspar. Just find the dose that works for you. Fantastic drug. Yes, takes a week for you to feel full effects but it's not addictive like Xanax or the other benzos.

    Plus, it's cheap!

    Re: Success with Buspar

Thank you dear posters for your informative replies! This gives me much hope for trying something new. I had my appt today and was prescribed Buspar 5mg twice daily.
I have to take a BP pill in the morning and Synthroid too.
I wonder where I should "weave" in the Buspar?
does it matter~or could it interfere?
One forgets the right questions at the docs ofice and then remembers when we get home!

    Re: Success with Buspar

I started out on the 5 mg twice a day for a week. The next week I cut a 15 mg (they are scored) twice a day and I'm supossed to go to the full 15 mg twice a day this week.
I,too, take snythroid in the morning. I take the buspar about an hour after that, or when its ok to have breakfast. So far so good.
In the afternoon is my hrt and an hour later another buspar. Not to be funny...but, pretty soon there won't be enough hours in a day to take all these meds!

    Re: Success with Buspar

Looks like you're on the Dividose 15 mg tabs. My Doc put me on Mylan 15mg when I was midterm into the dosage advancement but I found it a bit too much to take all at once, so I opted for a Rx of 10mg pills, taken 3 times a day.

It's hard to find the "sweet spot" but give it time, you'll know when your times/dosages are agreeing with you.

Northwest1- funny you mention, "sweet spot". I hadn't thought of the 3 doses a day but I have noticed a slight drop off and I'm lookng for the next dose. Still in the early stages and although I am much improved, it going to take some time. I want my life back so bad. It feels like I'm on the right track.

    Re: Success with Buspar

One thing I have read about Bupar is to EITHER take it with food or not with food. With food versus without food messes with the dosing delay. Whichever one works but just be consistent. For me I always take it with food, even if it is just a glass of milk in the morning.

Oh and for spacing out drugs, that would drive me nuts. I take Lexapro, Diovan (BP) and Buspar in the morning. Buspar right after dinner. Toprol (teeny BP dose), Traxodone (sleep), Melatonin (sleep) and Zymine (allergies) at bedtime.

And yeah, I have three daily drug compartment thingies. Gotta have them or you'll start forgetting.

    Re: Success with Buspar

thank you ladies very much for all the helpful replies. I,too take Diovan first thing in the morning and then Synthroid. It can be a royal pain trying to always take the Synthroid on an empty stomach(as recommended).
Then when you throw another pill in the mix,it gets complicated.
It astounds me that when we get a new script, the doc or practitioner will not even advise how or when to take it. Then you get home and have all this new combo of pills and dont know where to begin?
I guess it's trial and error. But then again, some meds may interfere with others. I got some good suggestions here, thankfully!
